As Children who grew up in a feudalistic society in Ethiopia, we were all wounded in some way and to some degree by the wild world we encounter. Our hope thought the educated sectors might help us helping in the heeling of each other’s wounds which we carried it with us through our child and adulthood. Unfortunately, the educated turned out to be the worst intensifier of racism we ever experienced before.
Ibsaa Guutama is a member of the generation that drew the first political program of the OLF (source- from the paper presented by Ibsaa Gutama at the Second Annual International Oromo Human Rights Conference in Twin Cities- Minnesota on July, 2007). Remember, he is one of the few elements who frame the OLF program which demanded Ethiopia to be destroy to unviable state (for total elimination from existence!- I have posted that particular program for readers five years back on the internet-if necessary, I can post it back to those who didn’t see it)
As I was searching for important document on the internet few days a go, I saw two files attached each other from two popular personalities with different contradictory views addressing social, political and Human Rights issue. One of them was Mr. Obang Metho of Gambella addressing his respected views of love, brotherly reach out for humankind and the love he have to his beloved nation “Ethiopia” at the mentioned rally and conference invited by the host calling itself “International Oromo Youth” (the piece mouth of the OLF Right-Wing, mainly packed with racist and ill informed youths whom many of them born and grew up outside Ethiopia/Africa).
The other document was written by Ibsaa Guutama and speech presented by him at the above mentioned conference held on July, 2007 (posted on the political prostitute website called Ethiopian Review- where the entire door is open twenty four/seven for anti Ethiopian groups to spread their distortion and hate propaganda). For a reason I can’t pricise, I missed this one at the time from reading it. As I looked at Ibsaa Guutama’s paper, the injustices he was complained done to the Oromo by the “Abyssinians/Habesha people (a replaced name given to us by his preferential way to replace the name “Ethiopians”) was used by him as a cover up to prove he was a worthless leader who is not qualified to speak on behalf of the abuse in search of justice.
What surprised me was, none of the so called Ethiopian educated elements react reading such racist speech and unstable position of his program. It might be the patience and tolerance of the Ethiopian’s absence on media to expose this element’s racist character contributed to the continuation of the distortion and group fantasies of the OLF followers showing too much disrespect to Ethiopins.
Reading Ibsaa’s vision, his wounds (if he really had one) is justified by his own bigotry and unworthiness. Many of you recall, the elites of the OLF beginning from the Derg- era demanded the name “Gala” be replaced to “Oromo”. Was it reasonable or not, we leave that to the psychologists and psychiatrist experts to figure that out. In our part, some though debated the validity of name changing and its effect and production in the social relation with others and its legality; ~ vast majority Ethiopians agreed with them to call them with their preference name “Oromo”, not as “Gala”.
The name Gala according to some historians and highly researched documents showed/argued using such name (Gala) was never been a derogatory name. According to the historians and linguist, Oromo or Gala is the same of one proud name of the Oromo. What ever triggered this inferiority complex/vulnerability for name change, many people are now calling them Oromo not Gala. If one calls them Gala at the current situation, he/she is liable to be exposed or labeled as “racist” and anti Oromo people. Let us now examine the psych and the paper presented by this top veteran OLF member.
Ibsaa complained the Ethiopians calling the Oromo as Galla. But when it comes to Ethiopia and Ethiopians, his paper asserted he is in titled to call Ethiopians and Ethiopia in any ancient names we had been known by denying our Ethiopianity as if it is not us but others of his choice and the name Ethiopia as not our name but Habesha/Abyssinia.

The present Ethiopia is name sake of ancient civilization of upper Nile centered in Merowe; it is not that Ethiopia. This one used to be called Habashaa (Absinia). Oromia fell under Habesha rule at the end of the nineteenth century, during a phenomenon known in history as Scramble for Africa. Habashaa was the only Black Country that participated in the scramble with European imperialist “.
Can you sense clearly the inferiority, the ignorance of history, the fear, the talk back attitude campaigned by anti-self stereo type racism out of this man’s uncontrollable emotion downgrading of history and identity of millions of millions of Ethiopians? Is Habesha/Abyssinia our name too? Yes! We never complained of it, even in the face of the most vicious Eritrean racist elements when called us “Agame”, never tempted to change Agame to different name out of unfounded fear and destructiveness.
The case of Ibsaa Guutama, the man as a veteran OLF leadership who demanded from us (from Ethiopians) to respect his identity as Oromo not as Gala- since Gala is not (according to OLF) a proper name but Oromo as the “legitimate” name. When such person and his organization’s press releases (see all OLF’s press releases) deny our country’s name not “Ethiopia”, our name and identity not “Ethiopians” but “Habesha and Abyssinians; don’t you fellow Ethiopians and friends of Ethiopia think OLF is walking shackled its own self with the very first injustice it claimed hurt when someone calls them Gala?
The entire presentation of self denial, to hear them demanding “Oromo are not Ethiopians” is NOT new ear for us. One can’t force one who is already leaving its poor community behind dying and sacrificing while the top leaders and framers of the program of OLF are comfortably living with their family in the Diaspora in the defensive and belligerent mood suffering from self inflicted wound.
What we are worried here is, if truly the mission of OLF is to establish justice, why would someone in the leadership position claiming millions of millions of people representing fought hard for over 35 years, demanding for identity respect, violated millions of millions of Ethiopian’s identity? When OLF is denying others to give equal respect that the way Ethiopians agreed with them to call them their choice of their respected name which is “Oromo” not “Gala”, while OLF prefer to remain aggressively a racist institution; – then, no question in my mind it is creating/heading to a dangerous self territory mental terror and ignorance that it cannot afford to know. I urge its followers and many Ethiopians to not follow this racist entity, which is simply a bunch of low- esteem opportunists who are suffering from a jolt of inferiority that lacked itself into the territory of self segregation suffering from integration shock.
Denial is a refusal of painful self-acknowledge. I like to conclude my reaction to the OLF self denial and name changes and name callings where this organization is deeply plunging itself to the lake of hate year after year regardless Ethiopians was so tolerable to the crime perpetrated by OLF in Ethiopia against any Amharic and Tigringa speaking Ethiopians in the Oromo area which is on record.
Let me present you with an amazing writer “Shelby Steele” an African American a professor of English at San Jose State University in California where I live. His book “the Content of Our Character”- he says
“I think the most recent example of black pride-as denial is the campaign (which seems to have been launched by a committee) to add yet another name to the litany of names that blacks have given themselves over the past century. Now we are to be African Americans instead of, or in conjunction with, being black Americans. This self-conscious reaching for pride through nomenclature suggests nothing so much as despair over the possibility of gaining the less conspicuous pride that follows real advancement. In its invocation of the glories of a remote African past and its wistful suggestion of homeland, this name denies the doubt black Americans have about their contemporary situation in America.
There is no element of self- confrontation in it, no facing of real racial vulnerabilities, as there was with the name “black”. I think the name “black” easily became the name of preference in sixties, precisely because it was not a denial but a confrontation of inferiority anxiety, with the shame associated with the color black. There was honest self-acceptance in this name, and I think it diffused much of our vulnerability to the shame of color. Even between blacks, “black” is hardly drop-dead fighting word it was when I was a child. Possibly we are ready now for a new name, but I think “black” has been our most powerful name yet because it so frankly called out our shame and doubt and helped us (and others) to accept ourselves. In the name “African American” there is too much false neutralization of doubt, too much looking away from the caldron of our experience. It is a euphemistic name that hides us even from ourselves. At the end, no black identity however beautifully conjured, will spare blacks this challenge that, despite its fairness or unfairness, is simply in the nature of things. Would OLF leadership recover from the self inflicted wound and inferiority complex it is suffering currently and pulls out from the lake of hate it deeply is plunged itself? Will OLF be foolish to demand a name change and expect a respect while it self has no drop of flagrant injustice in its soul for sample?

Then the western missionaries through pretext of Christianity invaded remote southern highlands then they converted the people to Protestants at least to create a gap like that of Ireland and Britain. This creation of new Identity. This western strategy to divide and rule is also partially successful in the Northern Ethiopia Adwa, where various missionaries were operating to create Adwa intelligentsia protestanism(olf=tplf).
Then they created a new history by giving Oromo scholarships and some thesis are written about the imagined new Identity. Then they translated the bible and through pretext of linguistic, they created them an alphabet. Now they are totally brain washed. Where ever they go in Europe, America, Australia, they give them asylum in priority. There are government and private agencies facilitating this including TPLF. OLF has nothing to do with oromia, it is an agent of imperialism, TPLF would like to use OLF, ONLF and Eritrea as unifying factors. This will enhance its rule and exploit Ethiopia incontestably.
I lived during the Italian invasion 1935 under Mussolini. But now it is the worst American colonialism. The Italians have also built roads and buildings in 5 years. Locust politics (Animal Farm)
I am writing again this comment to elucidate about locust politics and religious invasions and their consequences.
I have commented above that Islam is the first wave of religion in Ethiopia. But now it is accepted and the invasion did not create a territory and it invaded Ethiopians not a single Ethnic. While Protestantism invaded mainly Oromia and Adwa and tend to create Ethnic territory and Identity this has resulted in cessations movement.
These are species that can breed rapidly under suitable conditions and subsequently become gregarious and migratory. They form bands as nymphs and swarms as adults — both of which can travel great distances, rapidly stripping fields and greatly damaging crops.
In the Bible, a swarm of locusts comprised the eighth plague in the story of the plagues of Egypt. Proverbs 30:27 tells us that ‘the locusts have no king, yet they go forth all of them by bands’
In Plato’s Phaedrus, Socrates says that locusts were once human. When the Muses first brought song into the world, the beauty so captivated some people that they forgot to eat and drink until they died. The Muses turned those unfortunate souls into locusts — singing their entire lives.
In her novel On the Banks of Plum Creek, Laura Ingalls Wilder writes of a “glittering cloud” of locusts so large it blocked out the sun as it approached. The swarm descended upon her family’s farm , destroying a year’s wheat crop, and stripping the prairie bare of all vegetation.

I agree to some of your comments. For example when 60 ministers of Haileslassie were killed by Mengistu 1974 only Ras Mengesha escaped thanks to the solidarity of Tigre. The Amhara seem to be opportunists and hodams still that instinct is surviving.
Generally, killing for land was every where in Amhara, in Tigre , Oromia that was in the past it is not because Ethiopian have exceptional love for land it is a feudal system every where. All of the OLF “BOYS” are suffering from some kind of inferiority complex witch is inherited from the organization’s leaders way of teaching of victimization by referring Ethiopians are not blacks but Caucasians/Arabs, while the OLF boys graded themselves as “black” (what is black mean and how black is black, and how does the feature of black should look like, the lips, or the skin or weight what criteria should be answered by the OLF skin genetic experts the world ever known). Why are the OLF cults like to deal with race issue, one might ask/. The answer is clear- when some one takes wrong orientation from wrong groups; he will follow such teachings and stick with the principle of superiority. “Blackness- superiority” or illusory black specialness that offers from inner doubt repeating itself out on the air preaching his ethnic /race grandiosity (Nazi, Mussolini, this time the OLF(talking how large the ethnic is throughout Africa, how attentive black ethnic African it is ……and how and its endless grandiosity while Ethiopians are Caucasians and on and on –the delusion too long….) and the Eritreans (“though, in the case of Eritreans- the illusion is deflected this time after the poison of grandiosity is neutralized with REALITY). The sad thing is, those youngsters are living in the Caucasian countries if the Ethiopians are Caucasians the OLF should have better it is still in the mercy of the Ethiopians. So, the OLF need to go to the land where Caucasians do not live if they hate Caucasians and Ethiopians.
The other sad thing is this are teen age OLF elements that are very much distorted by Ibsa Gutama and the rest of the worthless elements who simply want to live in the Diaspora with a handout begging the Caucasians and Arabs by living their population behind for repression and bullets, while themselves can’t offer to be with them and carry the gun they preach to liberate them.
These OLF youth as I saw their website and their picture are so young and do not know their country Ethiopia and the vast majority relation of the Oromo people. If they label the Ethiopians as Caucasians and Oromo as blacks, this is a very dangerous KKK type of race grandiosity faith that can also reflect in the countries they reside against any one “Latino, India, black Americans with any kind of skin differences”. The OLF leadership is ruining the young Oromo children to be racist. You can see the deep level of ignorance of those OLF cults dreaming undreamed race grandiosity, while still living in the Diaspora begging Green Cards and citizens loving themselves to survive while they betrayed the very first population of Oromo they talk day in day out living abroad million miles away. Do you think this worthless opportunists will go back to the Oromo land even after liberated late alone now where they refuse to go and fight to liberate them according to the program they preach to fight? What is Ibsa. Lencho, Daud and the rest of the cult leaders are doing here in Diaspora? Are not those people who should be in the jungle fighting by now not watching Satellite Dish in Minnesota and DC? Can someone tell us what these people are doing here? Are they waiting to liberate them? I will be very glad to hear this if someone can brief us please! I never seen or heard a libration front leaders living in America and in Europe living normal life sending their kids working and getting every two weeks a check, AND YET talking about LIBERATION of OROMIYA is something very very strange! Still my browser filter did not allow me to watch the Video. Instead I have seen a number of short video in google. You know I am grown in the middle of liberation fronts in east Africa. I know what happens to the youth. Moreover I have observed heavy armament indicating that they have some sponsor or funding for all this armament by anti Ethiopian forces.
The problem with OLF is that there is no democratic free election in Ethiopia in general and in Oromia, inparticular, the people think that Abadulla is not their representative. So the constitution allows OLF to struggle peacefully (Which should be free election). Although I am not pro armed struggle it is obvious in the absence of forum and hope they have to resort to Armed. This is what we call CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS. Because constitution is not dogma, it has to pass referenda for amending some of its contents like article 39 etc And implement and exersise in trasparency.

Ohio Man Sentenced To Ten Years Imprisonment for Conspiracy to Provide Material Support to Terrorists

WASHINGTON – An Ohio man has been sentenced to serve ten years in prison for conspiring to provide material support to terrorists, Assistant Attorney General for National Security Kenneth L. Wainstein, U.S. Attorney Gregory G. Lockhart of the Southern District of Ohio, Assistant Director Joseph Billy, Jr., of the FBI Counterterrorism Division, and Julie L. Myers, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), announced today.
Nuradin M. Abdi, 35, a Somali national living in Columbus, Ohio, was named in a four-count indictment returned under seal in the U.S. District Court in Columbus on June 10, 2004. On July 31, 2007, Abdi pleaded guilty in federal court to Count One of the indictment, which charged him with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists.
Count One of the indictment specifically alleged that on April 27, 1999, Abdi applied to the Immigration and Naturalization Service – now known as ICE – for a travel document, wherein he concealed his destination by representing that he intended to visit Germany and Saudi Arabia for the purpose of “Umrah (Holly[sic] – Mecca) and visit my relative,” when he actually planned to travel to Ogaden, Ethiopia, for the purpose of obtaining military-style training in preparation for violent jihad. Abdi allegedly sought training in radio usage, guns, guerilla warfare and bombs.
“Today’s sentence is just punishment for a defendant who exploited our country’s freedoms and manipulated our immigration system on numerous occasions, all in an effort to support and conspire with international terrorists,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security, Kenneth L. Wainstein.
“I want to commend the men and women who have diligently investigated and prosecuted this case,” U.S. Attorney Lockhart said. “They are successfully carrying out one of our nation’s most important jobs in the fight against terrorism – stopping those in this country who provide support to terrorists.”
“Nuradin Abdi’s sentence should send a very clear message to those who, like Abdi, provide support to terrorist organizations and operatives. The FBI will not tolerate the propagation of violence and discord by those who wish to harm the U.S. and its citizens, and we will continue to work with our partners to pursue suspected terrorists and their supporters” said Assistant Director Joseph Billy, Jr., FBI Counterterrorism Division.
“Today’s sentencing brings to conclusion one aspect of a critical joint investigation that identified and stopped three terrorist supporters bent on causing panic and significant harm to U.S. citizens,” said ICE Assistant Secretary Julie L. Myers. “This investigation highlights the aggressive pursuit by ICE and the Department of Justice to identify and prosecute those who seek to terrorize America and its allies.”
According to the statement of facts agreed upon by the government and the defendant, Abdi first entered the United States in 1995 using a false passport. He once again illegally entered the United States from Canada in 1997. Abdi was later granted asylum in this country based on a series of false statements.
In the ensuing years, Abdi befriended co-conspirators Christopher Paul and Iyman Faris in Ohio. Christopher Paul was later arrested and indicted in April 2007 on charges of providing material support, conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, and conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction (explosives). Iyman Faris was later convicted of providing material support and conspiracy to provide material support to Al Qaeda. He is currently serving a 20-year prison term.
Federal agents arrested Abdi on Nov. 28, 2003. Abdi subsequently agreed to be interviewed by FBI agents and admitted conspiring with Faris, Paul and others to provide material support to foreign terrorists. These admissions by Abdi have been corroborated in a variety of ways, including bank records, travel records, invoices, and items seized in search warrants.
This case was investigated by the Southern Ohio Joint Terrorism Task Force, a multi-agency operation that includes agents and officers from 15 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
The investigation was a joint investigation by agents and officers of the JTTF, specifically ICE Special Agents Bob Medellin and Rich Wilkens; and FBI Special Agents Steve Flowers and John Corbin.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Dana M. Peters and Robyn J. Hahnert from the Southern District of Ohio and Sylvia Kaser, Trial Attorney with the Department of Justice’s Counterterrorism Section.

I had the same line of thought and did not want to comment but changed my mind for the similar reason. Mr. Getachew and his likes spoiled the brains of millions for a century and continue to do so. He and his ilk were never seen critically examining their own history. They could not see beyond their nose because of their empty pride. They lived and live in total denial.
This dude is a maniac and a narcissist disguised under concerned what ever. Obvious is also his over inflated ego and self-grandiosity. We used to call those would-like-be-elephant frogs “ye-gan mebrat”. He speaks in “we” form like his midget king used to do. Oh sorry, he was sent by the Almighty himself! What is surprising about resisting oppression, fighting for freedom, justice, and equality? Whenever the name OLF is mentioned, the first thing one hears is “Oh, they are terrorists and they want to separate Oromia from Ethiopia”. The core foundation of OLF is the fight for justice and equality for the Oromos. The best way, from my perspective, to fight all the liberation fronts is, creating a free society where the citizens have the freedom of self determination, the freedom of choosing their representatives, the rule of law, and sharing the resources of the country fairly and justly. If you do not give the people their rights, they will take it by force. One does not need to be a rocket scientist to understand this.
In line with the Oromo tradition of being polite and helpful, as you, I am also trying to be helpful and hold the mirror for Getachew so that he looks at himself and satisfy his narcissism.

For many years some Oromos have tried to reform the Ethiopian empire, they tried to create a democratic Ethiopian state in which they will be a master of their own wealth.
Some still think this is achievable but most of us realized that it takes a lot of work and resource to educate people’s rights and needs to people such as this debtara. And they are plenty of them.
It would consume so much energy trying to eradicate such ignorance.
My question is why waste all that energy? Why don’t we (the Oromos) channel these energy and resources to build our beloved country, Oromia?
What do we want from these people, what can they offer us except their backwardness, ignorance and arrogance. Why waste our time to convince them who we are. We can live without them with no problem. We don’t need them, they need us.
They need our resources, our coffee, our gold, our marble which they can no longer loot, steal, or snatch it by terrorizing our people. They have to do their home work on how they could be able to share our resources.
They have to offer us some thing valuable (can’t think of one) to share our resources in return.
Let us leave up to them in trying to figure out their problem and focus on librating and building our beloved country Oromia from century old colonialism.

Kenya arrests 12 suspected Ethiopian rebels

ISIOLO, Kenya, Nov 30 (Reuters) – Kenyan police said on Friday they had arrested 12 suspected Ethiopian rebels and nine locals accused of helping them in a remote region on the border with Ethiopia.
Two of the suspected members of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) rounded up this week have already been deported while the others are still being interrogated, said Rono Bunei, district police commander in the Kenyan border town of Moyale.
“The operation is still going on and we shall not allow any group to use our soil to fight a friendly government,” he said. The rest will be deported if confirmed as OLF members.
One of several insurgent groups fighting Ethiopian Prime Minister dictator Meles Zenawi’s government, the OLF seeks greater autonomy for ethnically Oromo areas of south Ethiopia.
The nine Kenyans were arrested for offering shelter to the 12, police said.
Some locals said innocent youths had been arrested.
“Most of the people arrested are Kenyans,” local resident Barrack Mohammed told Reuters.
“We have lived with them and they can’t do anything like that. The police are just picking on them.”

Nota Bene: While reading this paper, which I prepared for the forum on “Ethnicity and National Identity in Ethiopia, organized by the Ethiopian Students Association at Harvard, I ask the reader to bear in mind that my critical evaluation of ethnic movements does not signify that ethnicity should be ignored or suppressed.
However misguided ethnicized politics is, once it is born, it will not go away for the simple reason that it mobilizes strong emotional forces. Instead of confrontation, I maintain that it should be used to activate democratization and economic progress, the only way by which the emotional component can be neutralized. This use of ethnicity presupposes, on the other hand, a clear understanding of its nature, namely, that it is less about the rights of peoples than about elites vying for the control of state power.
The ethnicization of Ethiopian politics since the fall of Haile Selassie’s regime is both an aspect and a consequence of the radicalization of Ethiopian students and intellectuals in the 60s and early 70s. Only when we connect the ethnic discourse with radicalization do we understand that the structural problems inherited from the imperial regime are not enough to explain the birth of ethnonationalism. The latter requires that we pay attention to the cultural developments that brought about an educated elite too prone to radical and polarizing views. True, the reluctance of the imperial regime to make the necessary reforms had polarized the country and created the conditions of class and ethnic confrontations. No scholar can seriously underestimate the impact of state repression and lack of reforms on the radicalization of students. The impatience generated by the long postponement of necessary reforms could not but favor the adoption of radical positions. Still, the whole question is to know whether structural conditions resulting from the lack of reforms fully account for the radicalization of the educated elite.
This paper firmly maintains that the evil structural legacies of Haile Selassie’s long reign do not fully explain the drift of the country into the path of radicalization and ethnic confrontation, since reformist and less oppositional solutions were available. The venture into a revolutionary path is the direct product of the infatuation of Ethiopian students and intellectuals with Marxism-Leninism. This suggests that the ethnicization of Ethiopian politics is directly connected with the ideological hegemony of Marxism-Leninism among Ethiopian students and intellectuals in the 60s and early 70s.
Ethnicity and Radicalization
Some scholars”“”“especially those originating from dominated ethnic groups”“”“see the Ethiopian ethnic problem as the main driving force behind the radicalization of the Ethiopian student movement. They argue that the movement, which intensified in the early 1960s, took a radical turn in the late 60s by adopting the Marxist-Leninist ideology essentially to accommodate the mounting struggles that oppressed ethnics, notably the Eritreans, the Tigreans, the Somali, and the Oromo, waged against Amhara rule. The student movement could not continue its opposition to the imperial regime without addressing the growing demand for the democratization of the Ethiopian state through the dismantling of its imperial structure. For many scholars of oppressed regions, then, the deep cause of the 1974 Revolution was none other than the need to smash the political and economic structure of Amhara hegemony over other ethnic groups. As one such scholar writes:
The longstanding contradictions between the Ethiopian ruling class, state, and imperialism on one hand, and the colonized nations and the Ethiopian masses on the other hand caused two types of crises in 1974: the revolutionary crisis from below and the crisis of the ruling class and the state at the top.
At first, convinced that liberalism provided the necessary solution, the student movement called for a democratic society in which all Ethiopians will have equal rights regardless of their ethnic origin. The great shift occurred when Struggle, the journal of the University Students’ Union of Addis Ababa, published in 1968 Walleligne Mekonen’s famous article stating that Ethiopian ethnic groups are actually nations dominated by the Amhara ruling class. To quote Walleligne:
Ethiopia is not really one nation. It is made up of a dozen nationalities with their own languages, ways of dressing, history, social organization and territorial entity. . . . I conclude that in Ethiopia there is the Oromo Nation, the Tigrai Nation, the Amhara Nation, the Gurage Nation, the Sidama Nation, the Wellamo Nation, the Adhere Nation, and however much you may not like it the Somali Nation.
In maintaining that Ethiopia is not yet a nation, the article squarely reduced the Ethiopian polity to the imposition of Amhara culture and interests on conquered nations, even as regards the northern part of the country. Moreover, the use of the concept of dominated nations gave dignity to the resistance against the imperial regime by transforming what so far was belittled as tribalism into national liberation movements. The significant contribution of Walleligne’s article lies in the “conceptual change he introduced into the ongoing political and academic discourse by raising the status of non-Amhara peoples in the Ethiopian empire from “˜tribes to nations and nationalities,”? says one Oromo scholar. Consequently, provided they were socialist, Walleligne supported all the uprisings of oppressed groups, including their right to self-determination. Such movements weakened the regime, but most of all they were liberation movements that fought for the empowerment of working people. Not to support their struggles amounted to allying with the imperial regime and, worse yet, to opposing socialism in the name of a nationalism that reflected nothing more than the dominance of the Amhara ruling elite.
What drove Walleligne to write an article that simply called for the dismantling of Ethiopian state and unity? The question becomes all the more perplexing when we note that Walleligne was himself an Amhara from Wollo region. Hardly can we understand this extraordinary self-depreciation outside the influence of the Marxist-Leninist ideology. By depicting the Ethiopian society as a backward and obsolete feudal system, the Marxist-Leninist analysis gave a highly demeaning and gruesome picture of Ethiopia. Is it surprising if, as a result of this reading, Ethiopian students and intellectuals became prey to what an Ethiopian scholar, Hagos Gebre Yesus, called “national self-hatred and nihilism?”? Behind the endorsement of ethnonationalism, there is nothing but “national self-hatred and nihilism and . . . attachment to ethnicity and separatist politics based on ethnic, religious exclusiveness,”? he contends.
The following quotation taken from Struggle dramatically epitomizes the movement from Marxism-Leninism to national nihilism.
In our Ethiopian context, the true revolutionary is one who has shattered all sentimental and ideological ties with feudal Ethiopia. . . . Our rallying points are not a common history, a feudal boundary, the legendary Solomonic fairy tale, religious institutions, regional ethnic, linguistic affiliations, but the cause of the oppressed classes, who are the ultimate makers of history. That is why we are internationalist, because the masses have no nation, no home.
This unbelievable passage exalts uprootedness and self-denial by offering revolutionism as a substitute for Ethiopianness. Instead of common history and culture, both rejected on account of being feudal, the commitment to an internationalist view championing the unity of the oppressed is suggested as a much more worthy goal. The resolution to eradicate sentimentality and any attachment to Ethiopian characteristics clearly indicates that the rejection of tradition is not based on the examination of its negative and positive aspects. It is the product of a boundless, indiscriminate hatred that targets nothing less than a complete shakeup of Ethiopian society.
This ultimate deconstruction sees Ethiopia as yet to be born, redesigned as it should be around the struggle and the cause of the masses. For such a deconstructive project, nothing of Ethiopia is sacred, untouchable, not even national unity. Thus, Challenge, the journal of the Ethiopian Students Union of North America, takes pride of the position of the Ethiopian Students Union in North America because it “reiterated its unconditional support for the right of the Eritrean people to self-determination including independence.”? Once common legacy is rejected, no reason remains to condemn secessionist movements. An equally valid way of getting rid of oppression, however, would have been the struggle for democratization. But since Ethiopia must be redesigned, the recognition of the right to secede to resolve what is but a democratic issue is a forced component of the revolutionary project.
The Imperative of Doctrinal Consistency
The connection with radicalization suggests that, in order to understand the birth of ethnonationlism, we must first inquire into the abandonment of liberal or democratic solutions. And this inquiry means nothing less than the acceptance of the prior nature of the Marxist-Leninist commitment. Far from ethnic problems accounting for the radicalization of Ethiopian students, the prior commitment to Marxism-Leninism explains the abandonment of the liberal approach. If the issue of ethnic equality progressively appeared unsolvable with a liberal approach, the reason is not so much the inadequacy of liberalism as the need to be consistent with the commands of the Marxist-Leninist doctrine. The more loudly one claimed to be Marxist-Leninist, the harder it became to resist the endorsement of the right to self-determination. In other words, the students’ need for doctrinal consistency, which need authenticated their radical commitment, led them to posit the issue of dominated peoples in terms of dominated nations, even though no historical facts of whatever kind supported their new reading. Their overriding concern was the compliance of their approach with Leninism, which required the socialist solution and endorsed the right to self-determination. Anything short of viewing dominated ethnics as nations and nationalities would have validated the liberal approach. The endorsement of the Marxist-Leninist commitment to internationalism and to the right to self-determination was so categorical that, in the words of Randi Rønning Balsvik, “the feeling was rife that ideology had become more important to the students than the survival of Ethiopia as a state.”?
Another major distortion caused by the imperative of doctrinal consistency is the interpretation of the southern expansion of Ethiopia as a colonial conquest. The expansion refers to Emperor Menilik’s forced incorporation of what are today the southern and eastern parts of Ethiopia. According to some scholars, the doubling of the size of the empire through the incorporation of neighboring peoples at the exact time European powers were vying for colonial possessions in Africa was nothing short of a colonial conquest. This colonial interpretation of the southern expansion does no more than confirm the extent to which Ethiopian history and culture are depicted through radical concepts. Once the colonial grid is introduced, the requirement to get rid of the alien ruler is added to oppression and domination and the demand for self-determination overtakes the aspiration for equal rights. The issue is no more the termination of Amhara domination and oppression through democratic changes, but the dismantling of the colonial empire and the accession to independence. Rather than calling for a democratic process of national integration, the colonial reading simply targets the dismantling of Ethiopia.
Another forceful impact of the need of doctrinal consistency is the support that the student movements gave to the Eritrean insurgency. Even if I do not fully follow Tekeste Negash when he says, “it would hardly be an exaggeration to state that it was in response to the Eritrean challenge that the Ethiopian student movement began to develop a strategy for resolving the problems of nation-building,”? there is no denying that Eritrean students have significantly contributed to the ethnicization of student politics in Ethiopia. The ethnicization spread first to Tigrean and then to Oromo students, thus forcing the student movement to find a solution to the national problem. Moreover, the Eritrean armed resistance provoked both admiration and the tendency to emulate. Some factions in the student movement began to advocate the creation of a guerrilla movement to overthrow the imperial regime.
The influence of the Eritrean resistance grew with the emergence from within the insurgency of a Marxist-Leninist guerrilla faction, the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF). Not only did the Front become “the vanguard of the radical opposition by its doctrine, its organization and its mobilizing power,”? but also radical students could now support the insurgency in the name both of doctrinal consistency and partnership with a fighting ally. To recognize the EPLF was none other than to support the struggle of Eritrean working masses. In addition, given the ideological orientation of the Front, the only way to accommodate Eritrea within the unity of Ethiopia was to initiate a socialist revolution and implement the Leninist solution. Since “the formula, disunite to unite, was behind Ethiopian students’ attempts to work out a stand on the Eritrean matter,”? no better proof existed to display the loyalty of the student movement to Marxism-Leninism than to support the Eritrean insurgency.
Important ideological arguments were added to the need for doctrinal consistency. Radicals had succeeded in convincing many students that the emphasis of liberalism on individual rights was not the right remedy, unable as it was to structurally undermine the Amhara dominance. In the context of the primacy of individual rights, the promotion of individual equality regardless of ethnic belonging is not enough to dismantle an already established dominance. Oppressed ethnics must organize themselves as autonomous groups to conquer and affirm their rights. While the liberal model underscores the rights of the individual, the Leninist formula recognizes group rights. The recognition creates the political reality necessary to tear down the oppressive structure. Let it be added that Western governments’ support to Haile Selassie’s regime made the repudiation of liberalism as an inadequate solution easier. And since without a genuine equality the unity of Ethiopia could not be safeguarded, the recognition of the right to self-determination appeared as the only correct solution.
Because it recognizes the right to self-determination, the doctrinal position advocating unity via disunity stands out as the only way to preserve the Ethiopian unity. Who can deny that equality emanating from the exercise of self-determination alone removes the main motive why people want to secede in the first place? Explaining that revolutionaries do not defend the right to self-determination to promote balkanization, a study published by the Ethiopian Students Union in North America writes:
Revolutionaries strive to create as large a state as possible, for this is to the advantage of the laboring masses; they strive to bring about a rapprochement between nationalities and their further fusion, but they desire to achieve this aim not by violence, but exclusively through free, fraternal union of workers and the toiling masses of all nationalities.
Lastly, the preservation of the unity of students was another cause for the prevalence of the Leninist approach. It was felt that the movement could not maintain its unity unless it took a clear stand against Amhara domination and advocated the promotion of oppressed peoples. No other way existed to preserve the participation of Oromo, Eritrean, Gurage, and Tigrean students in the movement than to concede, in the spirit of genuine equality, the rank of nations and nationalities to dominated ethnic groups. The recognition was all the more crucial because of all ethnic groups Tigrean students were “the most politically active on campus.”?
The Lack of Renovated National Ideology
Granted the compelling nature of doctrinal consistency, still the history of the Ethiopian student movement shows that a great number of students dragged their feet in endorsing the Leninist solution to ethnic inequality. Aware of the danger of the Leninist idea of self-determination, some students proposed Ethiopianism as a renovated nationalism. Ethiopianism transcended both Imperial Ethiopia and ethnic loyalty through the assertion of equal rights and the promotion of national integration; it defined Ethiopia as the integrated unity of free and equal citizens. Moving on the offensive, groups of students, including some activist students, denounced the Leninist approach as a promotion of tribalism and national divisions. The offensive proved successful:
The 1967 annual meeting of NUEUS [National Union of Ethiopian University Students] debated the national issue and passed strongly worded resolutions condemning “˜sectarian movements in Ethiopia,’ labeling supporters of the movements petty bourgeois opportunists and reactionary elements that were encouraged by reactionary Arab forces. . . . The meeting declared Eritrea an indivisible part of Ethiopia.
If there was one issue against which the majority of students resisted the pressure of radical students, it was the commitment to the national unity. Many students were willing to follow the radicals all the way except on the question of Ethiopian national unity. So strong was the national sentiment that in the 1968 election the candidate of the radicals, Tilahun Gizaw, lost the presidency to Mekonnen Bishaw, who represented the moderate view. The radicals explained their defeat by the fact that “students were deceived by professional agitators,”? who spread rumors suggesting that they were in league with secessionist movements.
The rise of a rival movement, expressly defining itself as “Ethiopianism,”? confirms that the safeguarding of Ethiopian nationalism was an important concern, especially among many Amhara and Tigrean students. Moderate students initiated the movement to counter the Marxist-Leninist ideology, all the more so as radical students’ support to the Eritrean secessionist movement had particularly antagonized the nationalist feeling. Observing that the support had weakened the influence of the radicals, moderate students saw the nationalist issue as an opportunity to rally the majority of students. An article published in Struggle under the title “Ethiopia and Ethiopianism”? gives the following definition:
Ethiopianism is the concept that transcends personal, tribal, and regional loyalties. It is the belief held by the Ethiopian who thinks in terms of the people as a whole . . . . To him what matters is not his loyalty to one person, religious or tribal groups, but to the development of the people, as a whole. To him, the leader or the government is but the agent for carrying out the development and reforms needed to lessen the misery of the population.
Written by an Ethiopian Muslim, the article visibly avoids Marxist-Leninist jargon, such as class struggle, revolution, self-determination, etc.; instead, it advocates reformism, as it considers “the accumulation of wealth by a few individuals as undesirable, when there are millions struggling for a decent place in the sun.”? Reforms pave the way for genuine national integration. They result in the creation of a nation of equal and free individuals through the transcending of linguistic, regional, and religious disparities. That Ethiopianism is proposed as a rival ideology, another article in the same issue makes it quite clear:
Existence of regionalism and tribalism (primitive sentiments) in Ethiopia are realities that we should accept; but what we should not accept is their perpetuation. But they do not die out by evasion and avoidance. They die out only when they are replaced by a higher and progressive ideology, (such as Ethiopianism or Ethiopian Nationalism).
The moderate students who thought of using the ideology of Ethiopianism to counter the growing influence of Marxism-Leninism did not fully realize the extent to which Marxism-Leninism was an even more powerful seducer of nationalism. For one thing, the promotion of the interests of the oppressed and the exploited as a means of creating a truly united nation appeared too remote, given the reluctance of the imperial regime to undertake any serious reform. For another, the Leninist proposal alone was liable to enlist the enthusiastic support of oppressed ethnic groups themselves. Above all, Ethiopianism was unlikely to contradict the influence of Marxism-Leninism because its proposals were not enough to undermine the imperial regime and inspire a movement of opposition. In a word, it was not a renovated nationalism: it neither comprised a clear strategy of economic development, nor reinterpreted the traditional culture so as to make it conformable with modernization.
This is to say that Marxism-Leninism stood for an unrenovated nationalism. Under the imperial regime nationalism was crippled both by the uprooting effect of a Westernized educational system and the lack of reforms necessary to remove the numerous hurdles to socioeconomic growth. It is therefore not contradictory to assume that the frustration of nationalism is one of the reasons why so many young educated Ethiopians turned to Marxism-Leninism in the ’60s and early ’70s. This approach corrects Hagos’s statement: what inspired the student movement was not so much national nihilism as the frustration of nationalism. While in becoming Marxist-Leninists students were going against important features of their legacy, the enchanting promises of socialism made these rejections worthwhile, and so metamorphosed them into an expression of higher fidelity. To the extent that Marxism-Leninism had become the ideology of those driven by “radical nationalism,”? it naturally reached an increasing number of students as disillusionments over the imperial regime grew.
Nationalism via Internationalism
An objection comes to mind: How does the assumption that Marxism-Leninism cajoles nationalism agree with the equally important commitment of the theory to internationalism? Enshrined in Marx’s celebrated declaration, “the workingmen have no country,”? internationalism is certainly not the kind of thought that encourages nationalist fervor. What is more, Lenin’s recognition of the right to self-determination of oppressed nationalities was a direct challenge to the very unity of Ethiopia. Student publications largely confirm the blindness of radical students to the danger of the Leninist formula. Thus, one editorial of Struggle writes:
A true revolutionary is an internationalist, who has understood the dialectical developments of nature and society and who is above all deeply moved by the injustice humanity is subjected to. Thus, for a revolutionary, there are no regional, linguistic, national or even continental boundaries. The most significant factor is the economic exploitation and subsequent dehumanization of the oppressed classes.
Carefully read, however, student publications reflected a nationalist manifesto rather than national nihilism. The recognition of the right to self-determination was an attempt to preserve the unity of the student movement. In particular, it was supposed to be appealing to those students who were going over to ethnonationalism. The latter had become increasingly attractive to students coming from highly aggrieved ethnic groups, such as Eritrean, Tigrean, Oromo, and Gurage students. By revealing in ethnic oppression the dimension of class exploitation, Marxism-Leninism seemed to give a correct analysis of the existing reality, but even more so to offer a solution that fell short of advocating secession. As such, it proposed a pact between revolutionaries coming from oppressed and oppressing ethnic groups. Activating the sacrificial ethos on both sides, it demanded of Amhara students to give up the traditional hegemony of their ethnic group in exchange of students of marginalized groups abandoning their separatist goal. The mutual sacrifice sealed a new “nationalist”? deal based on the common interests of the working masses.
Herein lies the considerable influence of Leninism on nationalist sentiment: it “offered a narrative of how to weld together . . . disparate ethnic groups into a unitary state defined by the boundaries of a previous conquest””by Russians in the Soviet Union and by Amhara and Tigreans in Ethiopia.”? Inversely, it was felt that liberalism cannot achieve ethnic equality: the maintenance of the class structure will simply preserve the hegemony of the dominant ethnic group. Only the destruction of the class system can pave the way for the autonomy and equal rights of ethnic groups. Once working people from oppressed groups have exercised their right to self-determination, they will unite freely with their class brothers and sisters of conquering ethnics.
This is exactly what Walleligne had in mind: his diatribes against Amhara domination turn into a calling to “build a genuine national state,”? which he defines as “a state where Amharas, Tigres, Oromos, Aderes, Somalis, Wollamos, Gurages, etc. are treated equally . . . where no nation dominates another nation be it economically or culturally.”? But what about the support that Walleligne gives to secessionist movements? Here again, his support is conditional on the genuine socialist orientation of the secessionist movements, his argument being that, with an internationalist outlook, “a socialist movement will never remain secessionist for good.”? Clearly, the attempt was to strengthen the Ethiopian nation by transcending ethnic attachments through the internationalism of socialist ideology.
Elite Conflict and Ethnicization
Since the original source of ethnicization is the infatuation of Ethiopian students and intellectuals with Marxism-Leninism, a full analysis must discuss the factors that brought about the infatuation. The question of elite radicalization is complex and involves multiple causes. The general consensus among theoreticians of revolution distinguishes five major schools that present an original analysis of the causes of revolutions. They are: (1) the theory of relative deprivation, which gives the central role to the psychological phenomenon of frustration of the working masses; (2) the functionalist-structural approach that focuses on disequilibrium in social systems; (3) the Marxist-Leninist theory with mode of production and class struggle as central concepts; (4) state-centered approaches that put great stress on the breakdown of the state; (5) political conflict theory, which emphasizes elite competition. What constitutes the originality of each school is not so much the discovery of a new causal phenomenon as the emphasis on one variable judged crucial for the eruption of revolutions.
The Marxist theory of class struggle and, in some sense, the theory of relative deprivation bring out the chief role of the masses in the revolutionary process. Marx’s central notion of class struggle underlines that the masses, rather than elites, make history, which history realizes their aspirations in a progressive and goal-oriented fashion. The problem with this approach is that the people who become instigators and leaders of revolutions do not often come from lower classes. Knowing the essential role of leadership, it is very difficult to argue that revolutions are propelled by the demands of the masses. That is why such schools as the functionalist approach or political conflict theory underline the crucial role of elite conflicts. These schools have developed views that replace class struggle by intra-class or intra-elite conflict. For them, in all revolutionary situations, “the conflict and “˜struggles’ were intra-class within the old and emerging new ruling classes, which responded to underlying economic changes. Slave and serf revolts were at best secondary and supplementary.”?
The basic assumption that radicalization is a product of intense elite conflicts perfectly applies to Haile Selassie’s regime. The conditions that create elite polarization and conflict were indeed quite active in the imperial regime, given that the blockage of the circulation of elites was a salient feature of the regime. Not only as an aristocratic system it offered no opening to commoners, but also the upper level was dominated by one ethnic group, the Amhara. This does not mean that individuals from humble origin or marginalized ethnic groups did not rise; they did, but they were few in number and had authority only to the extent that they remained Haile Selassie’s protégés. The blockage of social mobility took an acute form as modern educated individuals saw their ambition increasingly thwarted by a closed aristocracy stubbornly defending its traditional privileges. Though modern education was praised and encouraged, educated people had no say in the formulation of policies; they were simply asked to serve a regime that excluded them politically. This exclusion became increasingly intolerable as economic crises drastically narrowed employment possibility for university dropouts and graduates. For the rising educated elite, the situation offered no other way out than a complete overthrow of the old elite.
Be it noted that these adverse structural conditions only established the possibility of political revolution in Ethiopia. The political overthrow of the landed aristocracy was enough to open up the system: neither the complete transformation of the class system nor the adoption of Marxism-Leninism was necessary to give a political representation to the modernizing elite. How then is one to explain the drift toward a radical revolution? For many students of Ethiopia, the question amounts to asking why the excluded educated elite felt the need to speak in the name of the interests of peasants and workers. The overwhelming answer to this question underscores the inability of the educated elite to effectively overthrow the old elite and its imperial state without the support of the masses. It is therefore the need to gain the support of the masses that talked the educated elite into espousing the Marxist-Leninist ideology.
According to Gebru Mersha, for instance, radicalization has to do with the fact that “liberalism as an alternative ideology did not have a strong material base and even as an incipient tendency was already discredited.”? The extremely slow economic development and the suppression of political freedom under the imperial regime together with the dominance of foreign capital did not allow the creation of conditions favoring bourgeois forces. The educated elite had no other option than to mobilize the oppressed against the imperial regime by championing their interests. The incapacities induced by the closed society explain the drift toward a radical course.
John Markakis has developed a similar idea. For him, too, the root of the radicalization of the petty bourgeoisie is to be found in the blockage of social mobility, which offered no way out expect through an alliance with the working class and peasants. In default of any possible alliance with upper classes, the petty bourgeoisie had to make common cause with the oppressed. The perceived solidarity of interests between the masses and the petty-bourgeoisie inclined students, teachers, young officers, middle-strata state employees to become responsive to the radical ideology of Marxism-Leninism and to advocate a program of radical social change. This very radicalization propelled them to the leadership of the social protests. What is more, the alliance was not simply circumstantial: beyond the purpose of overthrowing the ancien regime, it included a project of social development beneficial to the petty-bourgeoisie and the masses alike, notably by the prospect of nationalization, which “would bring assets under its [petty-bourgeoisie] control in a greatly expanded state sector.”?
This analysis would have been correct if an alliance between the petty bourgeois, the workers, and the peasants had effectively occurred. Unfortunately, students and intellectuals did not see themselves as allies of the working masses; they viewed themselves as their representatives. Alliance maintains the differences so that the representatives of one class do not speak in the name of another class. Instead, the recognition of crucial common interests brings them together against a common enemy, without thereby dissolving their particular interests.
But then, the most consistent alliance would have been the striving for a liberal society through a political rather than a social revolution. In other words, the petty bourgeoisie did not need to adopt the radical ideology of socialism to obtain the support of the working masses. Liberal proposals, such as freedom of expression and organization, free election, government responsible to the parliament, etc., would have mobilized the working masses, all the more so as socialism was not initially a popular demand. The revolutionary ideology of the radical section of the petty bourgeoisie, and not the pressure of working classes, introduced the idea of socialism. Once radicalism is adopted, reformism becomes the expression of opportunism: it opens the system to new elites but gives nothing substantial to the masses. Rejecting categorically reformism Challenge writes: “let us all realize that to bog down oneself in reformism, today, is indeed an exercise in futility. Every good intentioned endeavor to help the people which is not linked to the revolution of the masses will not simply work!”?
One important assumption emerges: elites become radicalized, not because they need to represent the masses, but because their rise to power requires the complete overthrow of the old system. Accordingly, social revolution is the ultimate form of political competition, the very one opposing elites whose conflicts over issues have become so critical that they cannot be resolved within the existing political system. It is clear that an exclusive type of elite competition cannot appear in democratic states. Imperial or autocratic regimes alone are liable to systematically marginalize aspiring elite groups, thereby intensifying elite polarization to the point of breakup. Nothing could arouse more elite dissatisfaction than the protracted monopoly of power by Haile Selassie’s autocratic regime. The resentment against the monopoly of power by an old, outdated oligarchy accounts for the generalized disaffection of the educated elite, including the young officers in the army and police.
To the question why the Ethiopian educated elite opted for the radical ideology of socialism when it could have used liberal notions to unseat the regime, the answer is thus obvious: elite polarization created the need for radical, extremist ideologies. To be sure, democratic demands, such as freedom of expression, the right to organize, the rule of law, etc., would have been enough to ideologically undermine Haile Selassie’s autocracy. However, the political overthrow of Haile Selassie would not have been enough to empower the educated elite: the forceful presence of a landed nobility predominantly composed of one ethnic group required a change both in the class structure and the ideology of the imperial regime. Clearly, the association of radical ideology with the conquest of power rather than with class struggle better explains why elites produce or adhere to ideologies that defend the interests of the masses, such as Marxism-Leninism, instead of supporting liberal values and institutions, which are more in line with their elite status. They prefer radical ideologies less to uphold the interests of the masses than to radically undermine the regime that excludes them by putting it under the pressure of massive and far-reaching demands.
The rejection of liberal and traditional values explains, therefore, the ethnicization of the political conflict. For one thing, to the extent that the discourse of the revolutionary elite demeaned national traditions and values, even challenged Ethiopian nationhood, which it identified with imperial oppression, it was bound to revive local identities. The construction of Ethiopia as an empire in which one ethnic group, the Amhara, dominated other conquered and subdued ethnic groups clearly responded to the requirement of marginalized elites competing for power. Marginalized elites could not hope to wage a successful struggle unless they ethnicized their cause. Because liberalism was not enough to question the Amhara political and cultural hegemony, the first weapon to be used against the system was to get rid of the nobility and the imperial state by advocating a socialist society. Once liberal reform was out of the picture, ethnicization stepped in with its unique ability to give local elites the exclusive right to represent their ethnic groups and speak in their name. Indeed, what is characteristic of ethnicity is that it excludes elites belonging to other ethnic groups as strangers, outsiders, thereby giving a monopoly of representation to the elite group that is native of the ethnic group, that claims to have a natural, blood bond with the represented people.
Only the theory of elite conflict explains why the Ethiopian educated elite first identified with Marxism-Leninism and then gave birth to splinter groups advocating ethnicity. In addition to accounting for the ethnic dimension of the conflict, the concept of elite competition explains the active role that individuals from marginalized ethnic groups, such as Tigreans and Eritreans, played in the Revolution. Only by propagating an ethnicized polity could these marginalized elites successfully vie for power. Only as representatives of oppressed ethnic groups rather than of oppressed classes could marginalized elites pursue the political ambition of enthroning regional elites at the expense of the cosmopolitan or Ethiopianized elite. The positioning for elite competition explains why ethnicized groups were satisfied neither by the overthrow of the monarchy nor by the Derg’s radical attempt to end class exploitation. For them, the end of class oppression did not entail the end of the supremacy of Amhara elite.
Ethnicity is thus a construct of disgruntled and marginalized elites whose ambition for political prominence could not be achieved by means of liberal institutions. As a result, they first appealed to Marxism-Leninism to block out liberalism and then asserted their natural and exclusive right to represent oppressed groups by excluding other competing elites. It follows that ethnicity, allegedly rooted in peasant aspiration, is actually a product of elite competition. Alluding to Tigray’s fierce ethnicization, Gebru Tareke rightly writes: “contrary to the TPLF’s claims, the current “˜nationalist’ sentiment has been thrust upon the peasantry by the intelligentsia.”? It is also clear that the promise to uphold the interests of ethnic groups is a disguised way of pursuing elite hegemony in the name of oppressed ethnics. As a remnant of the Marxist-Leninist discourse, ethnicization has the proper function of giving a redemptive and disinterested connotation to the drive to power of elitist groups. Our experience both of the Eritrean and the TPLF regimes fully confirms that the liberation from Amhara rule only gave way to elitist political systems whose main function is to exclude other competing elites. 1544-1547- The first expedition of Emperor Gealwdewos accompanied by the Muslim army of the sultanate of Hadya agonist the Oromo invaders. On the Awash
1555-1562; Oromo Territorial occupation begins. Oromos were no more conducting simply raiding expeditions. The Oromos conquered and settled permanently to administer the conquered regions and conquered people transformed into Gebaro, or serfs.
1555-1562; Bahrey tells us (chapter IX) that Emir Nur Ben Mujahid, Emir of Harar
(1551-1567) successor of Ahmed Grang has been fighting the first Oromo invasion of Harar city and its surroundings. It was indeed Emir who had built the historic Harar wall that surrounds the city to defend it against Oromo invasion.
In 1559 the army of Emir of Harar was defeated. Although, Harar city was effectively protected, all the surrounding Harar- Chercher mountains where lived the Adere, the Worji, the Mya and a number of other probably speaking ethnic groups boarding on Yefat. Where all conquered by the Oromos, depriving Harar not only of its most fertile agricultural lends but also of its freedom of movement and trade with the outside world through the Gulf of Aden coast. The era of glory of Harar was over.
1572-73 Harar was attacked by a huge mass of Oromo troops and Imam Mohamed Gasa had to evacuate Harar and move his capital to Aussa. The same Imam was killed by the Oromo in November 1583.
1570’s 1580’s: Oromo conquest of Shoa- Shoa largely inhabited by Amharic speaking Christians was the heart of the empire and common residence of the Emperors at Debreberhan, Tegulet, Etc… Shoa was occupied by the Mecha and Tulama Oromos.
1570’s-1580;s: Oromo conquest Amhara- Angot the home and origin of the ruling dynasty. Amhara which was burnt and destroyed by Gragn a few decades earlier (because Grang came with rifle, that was never seen in Ethiopian history for the first time. That is why he managed to control all the areas through the new war machine “Gun” given to him from the Turks) was now completely devastated by the Oromos in spite of the resistance of the imperial army. The whole Shanee Qinijit saga is a belly politics gone horribly wrong. The leaders of Shanee Qinijit had never been, and are not, OLF. The likes of Dawud (a.k.a. But they lack courage, which placed them between rock and hard place in the first instance.
In any event, I am not sure which faction of the Shanee Qinijit that has gone to court. The likely faction to have gone to court seems the Dawud group rather than the Lencho group. I say this because the Frew Masho group must be the more desperate them of all. Because the Lencho group is the group that sold their soul to the devil as they have now started maneuvering their supporters to pack their bags and head for Ethiopia, by hook or crook, before 2010 election. This group does not care about Frew Masho and the rest in Eritrea. ‘An gallaan gabaan wal haa loltu”. As far as this faction of the Shanee Qinijit is concerned the rest of the world can go to hell.
The Frew Masho faction has become captive to the Eritrean fortune. “Dabeessa du’atu barbaada”. It takes a miracle to free them. “It is to be recalled that Oromo Affairs reported the lawsuit brought against TA-OLF by the Asmara Group of OLF in a Minnesota Court. It looks like the Minnesota Court has decided on one of the four judgments the Asmara Group had applied for.
An internal source with in the Asmra Group of the OLF has informed this blogger that they have succeeded in obtaining a “temporary restraining order against TA-OLF and its members from passing themselves off as OLF and its officers or representatives pending a full hearing on the merits of the lawsuit.” (E-mail message from Source, July 25, 2007) According to this source, this judgment in effect has forced TA-OLF to cancel its planned public meeting for July 26, 2007, and that “in granting the temporary restraining order, the judge has concluded that there is a reasonable likelihood the plaintiff will prevail on its claim.”
The date for the commencement of the trial, which is expected to last for one and a half day, has been set to be August 16, 2007 at 2:00 PM.
A call to my sources in TA-OLF confirmed the trial date and the temporary restraining order, but would not confirm whether it is against TA-OLF or “some individuals.” The same source added that the judge also ordered the Asmara Group to post $25,000 bond to by noon on July 24, 2007 failing which the case will be dismissed. He believes the Asmara Group has posted the required bond which he says is “squandering $25,000 of Oromo hard earned dollars donated toward the struggle to defeat enemies of the Oromo people but are being used against Oromo nationalists.”
On the question of the temporary restraining order, according to my TA-OLF source, the US laws allow for restraining orders only in cases where monetary compensation will not remedy the complainants claimed potential damage which would ensue if the motion is denied. According to this source, this is clearly NOT the case here as the Asmara Group has already applied for $50,000 in compensatory damages in its application and therefore a restraining order is not allowed here. “Naturally, this is an order which should not have been granted in the first place and which we hope will be vacated in the next few days” said my TA- OLF source. He would not elaborate on how they plan to do this except to warn me to “Stay tuned.

I didn’t heard and I do not know who said it. But having said that, if it was said according to the way you exactly putted it; I didn’t see any problem of saying about individuals. Individuals can’t represent the Oromo as a mass speaking. What you need to ask if that made you uncomfortable is “who are the individuals” then they will tell you who those individuals are. There are individual criminals from Oromo community, murderers, spoilers and mean spirited and individuals still talking wanted to destroy Ethiopia and made the skin of Amhara and Tigrayan skin (after they killed them) to use it as a water jar (water sack holder). There are worst individual OLF members who are Oromo who foamed not only against individual Ethiopian (Tigray, Amhara…) but at the entire community and ethnic – above all they go as far as eliminating Ethiopian people and Ethiopia. So, it should not have irritated you as long as individuals are attacked for what ever reason as long as they are not threatening them to kill them or eliminate them as some OLF members always threatening me to physically kill me which I have documented them. Butm, It is expected from individuals to hear such.

As far as your comment commenting and resisting and exposing OLF’s crime to the public. It is legitimate to do so, because OLF is the most dangerous conflict intensifier who committed ethnic cleansing (filed on record). If we make sure the Oromo people are well aware of these dangerous spoiled leaders of the organization not to heed it its criminal advice, we are doing a good job to the Oromo people and to the rest of the Ethiopians from involving themselves in such advice of destruction and ethnic cleansing. You can’t find a good defense to the Oromo people than to advice and educate them about OLF’s irrational policy and program. That way what happened in 1990, 1991-1992 will not repeat against killing of people to people perpetrated by OLF and the similar groups that I stated on my article

It is very clear from your very superficial analysis that you are a type of person who is thick-head who would never learn from mistakes he or his ancessotrs committed! How on earth can you call Oromos as Ethiopians? Can South Sudanese people be people of Sudan (north) just because they are living in some geographic proximity? Can Palastine Arabs be Israelies despite loosing the vast majority of their piece of land to the Zionists (equivalent of Ethiopians), can Aboriginals of Australia be outsiders in their country just because the aggressive white people (again equivalent of Ethiopians) came to their land and enslave them? the answer is all similar….NO!
Similarly, you cannot point me out a single character , a single value that relates Ethiopians and Oromos. Not only Oromos, but Gambella (Anuak), Ogadenis, Sidama. All these Peoples DO NOT belong to ETHIOPIA!

Why habasha feel seek if Oromo speaks out that he/she does not want to be called an “Ethiopian”? In deed there is no origin that related both in the history of human life. Naftenya, gun man, crossed the red sea and conquered Oromiyan people, the indeginious that caused detest today due to the cruelity the have commited. The force and tact they used to knee down Oromo before now is diluting and the mass came to realize habasha even can not be a neighbour rather than being considered as a kinship. Oromo did not want habasha`s resource, though they loot and use Oromos` resource leaving Oromos suffer form their miltreating, but opted to free their land and guide own life with full tranqulity of the nation and remarkable own development. still it is unwise for habash to think ruling over Oromo nation including so many other diverse tribes is simple ahead in the era where even children are inadevance to know what is good or bad for them let alone the adults. Whether OLF is 3 or 4 it doesnot matter as long as all are struggling for the freedom of Oromia. You have to know that these dividion emanates from the democratic culture of the oromo people. Unlike our enemies/habeshas/, we donot go to eliminate each other by force. I consider the OLF factions as different war fronts struggling to free Oromia from Abysinian domination and occupation.
