The Wrong Linkage of the Millennium Celebration and Professor Hizkias Assefa’s Efforts of National Reconciliation

By Yilma Begashaw

Professor Hizkias Assefa appears to be on an important mission to facilitate dialogue among Ethiopians in Ethiopia and in the Diaspora for achievement of a national reconciliation, for peace and prosperity. This small comment thus refers to the Saturday, 28th of April 2007 meeting in London.

As this initiative is a golden effort that every peace loving citizen has been waiting for, I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to Professor Hizkias Assefa. In the mean time, I would like to express my concern that this golden initiative is hijacked by those whose interest is not the wider picture of bringing about a genuine national reconciliation but a temporal interest of celebrating the Millennium side by side with the Woyane Regime.

The Woyane regime is the only single group that blocked every chance of a national reconciliation. Please remember the following facts:

  • The Woyane regime consistently refused to attend important conferences for national reconciliation such as those known as Paris I and Paris II.
  • The opposition political parties that travelled to Ethiopia for the Hilton Conference on the national reconciliation were picked up from Bole Airport and were thrown into jail – remember to what has been happening to signatories such as Fitawrari Makonnen Dori, Aberra Yemaneab and others up to the present date.
  • The Woyane regime refused to accept useful discuss calls from the Coalition for Peace and Democracy (CUD) for a national reconciliation following the   2005 rigged national election. Instead of respecting those important calls, the regime flagrantly threw those peace loving leaders and members of the CUD into jail where they have been languishing for so long.
  • Instead of discussing with and respecting the human rights of the civic groups such as the members of the free press and the free Ethiopian Teachers’ Association, the brutal dictatorial regime chose to throw them into jails.
  • Despite calls from international donor agencies and the international human rights agencies, the Woyane regime did not show any willingness to get into a dialogue and national reconciliation conferences for democracy, peace and prosperity.

This regime does not have any moral capacity to invite the Diaspora to dance to the tune of the song of Ethiopian shame and humility especially for the following factors:

·        Its lack of willingness to participate in the national reconciliation briefly explained above,

·        Its wrong allegations of treason and genocide against innocent citizens and its refusal to release these prisoners of conscience;

·        Its assertion that Ethiopia is a colonial state of only a one hundred years of history.

My message is loud and clear:

  • Professor Hizkias Assefa shall continue with his good efforts to facilitate a national reconciliation for democracy and peace.
  • All the opposition political parties, the civic and faith groups  should learn from their past mistakes and strengthen unity to bring about democracy,  peace and prosperity.
  • Every concerned Ethiopian should avoid a temptation for petty personal interests and stop being the tools of the Woyane regime that seeks to fool the international communities by rallying many people, including the Diaspora, behind it in the pretentious celebration of the Millennium.
  • Let us all join hands to make the next Millennium a better place at least for the new generations.

  1. Greetings to All,

Our SCHOLARS,most of them, use their prestiage and good name in the services of justice for all. Time and again, few among these previlaged community masqurade as “PEACE MAKERS” AS IT IS A WELL KNOWN FACT THAT,PEACE IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF WAR BUT PESENCE OF JUSTICE.

Historicaly, the main root cause of injustice and conflict are tyranical regimes or dictatorial political power in the hands of few or individual rulers. These forces employ violence as the main instrument to control the polity in whose name they claim to rule. The masses who are denied their fundmental political, economical and social rights resist the violations of all their rights(human, civil,…}from simple complaints to organzied resistance(peaceful, armed}. The ruling class who is drunk in the arrognce of power belief religiously in violence to supress the demands of the majority of the people. The very regime who indiscriminately uses violence to safeguard and prolong its despotic rule cry foul when its opponents defend themseleves from its onslaught.

TPLF/EPRDF regime led by Meles is a one man dictatorship. Meles is the judge and jury in the sick Ethiopian body politics.
It might be understandable for some to hope their might be light at the end of TPLF/EPRDF(MELES REGIME) tunnel. But it reveals a stunning lack of carful knowledge concerning some of our “Learned” individuals. It bears little resemblence for serious thinking to uncritically accept as TRUTH the Woyane “millennium” call, when from its inception marches on a reckless joy ride through what it calls “pseudo Ethiopian history”. It is long over due to call ‘a spade is a spade’. The majority of the Ethiopian people has spoken in their collective wisdom that DICTATORSHIP NO! DEMOCRACY YES’. The so called “reconciliation” is a kind of plea bargain in criminal proceedings in US COURTS. Even here plea bargain is not proof of inocense but the lowering of the degree of punishment.
Let us not waste our vital effort in futile exercise to hoodwink the Ethiopian people. The majoity of Ethiopians all along have known who are thier friends or foes. They just want their day in court to express their sovereign rights. The ruled are way ahead of the curve,it is the wanna be rulers who are lagging behind.

  2. The article and the comment above are interesting.

First, Woyyane is organising millennium to celebrate and dance its victory over democratic and patriotic forces of Ethiopia and victimised innocents. Those who join them are congratulating them for job well done in stiffening democracy and human rights in Ethiopia, drink and dance to that.

Secondly, the Amen Group is doing just the other side of the same coin. Reconciliation with whom? The killers are in the camp of the ruling dictators. The jailers are also in the camp of those who do not care for peace and national reconciliation. The persecutors are members of the regime in power. They do not need any reconciliation. I think this group is working to convince us to fully and unconditionally surrender to the murderers in power. Let this be clear to every one. This group is working in collaboration with Seyoum-Mulugeta-Abebe-Yohannes network of Woyyane millennium co-ordinating committee in the name of peace and reconciliation.

Reconciliation comes only when those with the guns stop the murders and call for truce. There is no reconciling while they are killing, maiming, jailing and forcing our people into exile. How many of our youngsters had to sink in the Red Sea, perish in the Sahara desert to run away from tyranny before we understand they tyranical nature of Woyyane?

In South Africa, National Reconciliation was declared when the victims came to power, promising they were not going to seek revenge, for the sake of peace and stability of the country. They forgave their tormentors, when they came to power.

In Rwanda, the same thing happened.

Therefore, Peace and National Reconciliation in Ethiopia is possible only after the departure of Woyyane, and not while they are in power. Rather than trying to send a chilling cold into our spoine, the best thing for our scholars to do would be to work hard towards getting rid of the evils in power.

    Thank you

  3. The woyane regime has been called again and again for national reconciliation since it came to power. There has not been any positive response at all. From its inception TPLF personality shaped by violence. Its response has been and is violence for any peoples questions. In May 2005 election the Ethiopian people clearly sent a message that the regime could not stay in power. But stayed in power by killing and arresting hundreds and thousands of peaceful protesters. So, how can we expect from this dictatorship regime a reconciliation?
The only way is releasing the jailed political leaders, journalists and civil activists and starting a political dialogue with all who have a concern in Ethiopian politics.

  4. There is no any light under Woyane. The last our alternativ is to burn them above meskele adebabay like they did to our brothers and sisters in 2005.2000 Ethiopians millennum is thier last road to downfall.Forever

  5. Joan…
