CAN IDIOTS BE USEFUL?

HAMA TUMA

“Meanwhile, some in the Ethiopian “opposition” express sadness about the killing of 65 Woyanne soldiers by ONLF fighters in Ogaden. Useful idiots!”   ETHIOPIAN REVIEW WEB SITE/ April 27, 2007/

The word needs a definition before we can conclude if idiots can be categorized as useful. Idiot was originally a Greek word /in Latin it derives from idiota say some/ used to define those people in the city states who were overly concerned with their self interest and ignored the needs of the community. More like the Hodam reference made to certain puppets and hirelings of Meles Zenawi. Idiocy also was a result of sickness, of Down syndrome, of mental retardation though the use of the word is politically incorrect these days. In several American States (Iowa, Ohio, New Mexico, Arkansas, etc…) “idiots” have no right to vote. But how can they be termed useful?

The irreverent Devil’s Dictionary defines idiot in another way:

“A member of a large and powerful tribe whose influence in human affairs has always been dominant and controlling. The Idiot’s activity is not confined to any special field of thought or action, but “pervades and regulates the whole.” He has the last word in everything; his decision is unappealable. He sets the fashions and opinion of taste, dictates the limitations of speech and circumscribes conduct with a dead-line.”

According to this definition the idiot appears to be another name for Meles Zenawi. Is Meles ever useful for anything worthwhile? Much as I would like to call the pest an idiot, I would rather be speechless than call him useful. In other words, the concept of “useful idiots” continues to intrigue and confuse. The above quote indicates that the web site takes those who shed tears for the army of Meles Zenawi as “useful idiots”. Useful for Meles? For the community? For their stomach? It is not clear but the whole notion of “useful idiots” opens a Pandora Box of sorts and forces us to look closely at those we had concluded earlier to be useless through and through. Did we forget what the Greeks said about fools: from fools and children, you will learn the truth?

According to the original Greek definition of idiot, all those who are serving Meles Zenawi are idiots as they have ignored the interest of Ethiopia and are serving their stomachs. In the Politics of the Stomach, an art that is practiced with finesse in most of Africa, the stomach is all, the stomach has no communal feeling, and selfishness is the Emperor. Each stomach is all by itself, exercising self determination, unattached to others but unto itself, cutthroat competition the norm of the day, may the devil take the rest and the country to hell. Such idiots can be termed useful if only we define useful within the realm of negative example, like the Bush misadventure in Iraq can be termed useful if only as a lesson to the Bush puppet Meles not to invade Somalia. But idiots never learn. As the Ashanti proverb puts it: by the time the idiot has learned to play the game, the players have dispersed. The idiots of today could have learnt from the idiocy of their predecessors in the former regime but once again it should be said along with the proverb from Bihar, India, that the fool thinks of his belly only.

In the quote that provoked this article the useful idiots are those who cry foul because the soldiers of the regime have been killed by self proclaimed “liberation movement” soldiers who are, in my view, another version of the useless idiot. The useless ones are those who hail the slaughter?  This is left unsaid. For some the killers are patriots, allies, freedom fighters, for others the opposite. For every sane Ethiopian who is unaffected by idiocy the Meles regime is an enemy of the country and her people. Its soldiers kill and maim and serve the tormentors of Ethiopia. Why then should one cry if these soldiers get what they had been doling out to other people? Only “idiots” can cry foul. But then, why are they deemed useful? Because they teach by their idiocy? If we go along with this line of argument are all those  who believed in the peaceful electoral process idiots since it was clear from the outset that the Meles gang would never respect the voice of the people? What do we say to those who proclaim even today we should prepare for the next election? First class, new Millennium idiocy? Not differentiating friend from foe is folly of the highest level, like, during the Soviet era, hijacking a plane from East Berlin to Moscow.

In the Ethiopian context, the idiot tag is unavoidably going to stick especially to the so called doctors and professors whose overly concern with self interest has gone against the interest of the community and the country. Idiocy can wear intellectual garb too. A colourful doctoral “kaba” but coarse as poor man’s bernos. Ignorance is not always an involuntary misfortune. Quite a few of our strutting doctors and professors have prostrated themselves in front of the tyrant or the big power and betrayed the country–no need to name names. In their case, knowledge has turned sourly into ignorance and foolishness. In Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s classic, The Idiot, the hero Duke Myskin, is considered an idiot not out of lack of intellect but due to his honesty and kindness. As the Burmese say the kind hearted can become a slave. In our context, the idiots are so because they are mean and selfish and have sold their country for their insatiable stomach. Fools are of all sizes and of all capacities and a traitor, be he a professor or a PhD, can never be a patriot. But then again can such idiots ever be useful?

In the precise context of the quote that led to this article the idiots are those who shed tears for the dead soldiers of the regime. What about the hundreds killed by the soldiers all over Ethiopia? The question goes back to where we stand and with whom we stand. Every single life is valuable for someone somewhere and every dead soldier has a parent, a family and friends but this is neither here nor there. Mengistu and Meles have or had parents that loved them. So what? The battle lines are drawn, the negarit has been beaten, the tirunba heard. The war is on and one needs to stand on one side of the divide. We cannot cry for the regime and also wail for the people. Straddling the wall like a political Humpty Dumpty is a no go dead end. As our ancestors said: one cannot climb two trees at the same time just because one has two legs. This or that is a political choice. Idiocy or knowledge. The land of the political idiot is a wasteland populated by fools, cowards and traitors. Experience teaches fools but do idiots ever learn?

I for one think there are no useful idiots at all. Political idiots are totally and thoroughly useless and should be discarded  without any pity.

  1. You said it Hama Tuma. That is an exact expression.
Like the Burmes Proverb we have a good one also.
“Bulla dho ashiguno, bulla gondo shetano” that means if you are too good (obidiant) then you are the slave, if you are too bad you are a setan.

  2. Thank you Hama Tuma as always straight talk

  3. From GETACHEW REDA

    Dear Hama:

With all my respect to you still my respect will continue regardless our differences on this issue. We agree to disagree. I am very saddened and shocked by your comments when you attack the soldiers who are murdered by merci nary, terrorists and cold blood murderers whose only business is havoc and terrorism ever since the king until now without bringing an iota of change to the people of that area.. It is them the principal reason why the Eastern part always is suffering with hunger starvation, mystery, poverty and death. Check the Somalia situation- Are not the Ogaden people better with Ethiopia than the lawless country Somalia?

If on your words, the soldiers are idiots and version of Meles; what kind of army will you guarantee in the future Ethiopia/? And could you tell me how the future army will be different than what we have seen for centuries in the Ethiopian soldier’s history and also the armed guerrilla fighters TPLF, EPRP, OLF, ONLF….and those who lead them for years effectively ( “effectively”if the word is right)?

“The idiots of today could have learnt from the idiocy of their predecessors in the former regime but once again it should be said along with the proverb from Bihar, India, that the fool thinks of his belly only”.

How could the idiots of today in the regime expected to learn from the idiots of their predecessors in the former regime when the idiots of yesterday failed to learn from their yesterday’s and today’s failures and failed to lead the nation to freed it from the idiots of today?

“In the quote that provoked this article the useful idiots are those who cry foul because the soldiers of the regime have been killed by self proclaimed “liberation movement” soldiers who are, in my view, another version of the useless idiot”.

Brother Hama: I am one of the people who felt sad and cry from my heart for their death by terrorists, mercenary and cold blood murderers who created havoc during the king, Mengistu, now during Meles and will in the future of your system (since you or your organization will be one of the future’s leader ). No question these thugs will continue their mercinary mission, if so, how are you going to deal with them next time in the new government coming?

“The useless ones are those who hail the slaughter”?

No. We condemned the slaughter of the innocent civilians in Ethiopia for many years by TPLF thugs. But, that doesn’t cover the entire Ethiopian soldiers as you labeled them “idiots and the other version of Meles” is not apropriate name to tag them. No army, or soldier was never been the people’s army (except by name). Every paid army, soldier served the government who hired him to used it as a tool for his power and it is been that way ever since history of soldier started and will continue to obey and be the tool in the future government of Ethiopia. We can debate about it and deny about it beautify the future soldier and colored any good name and kind of attractive color/version we want to colored it- the history of soldier will repeat itself over and over as long as the army remains poor and uneducated.

“This is left unsaid. For some the killers are patriots, allies, freedom fighters, for others the opposite”.

if you still believe on such theory, what will you say to those who you called them “idiots” reply to you back “for some the soldiers are murderers and idiots and for others they are the patriots, fences of the nation who spilt their blood bravely fighting when the “Hotel Guerrilla” leaders from Europe or Washington decided to sacrifice some innocent and brainwashed white lamb and red Hen guerilla fighters trained in Eritrea for nothing but destruction”?

“For every sane Ethiopian who is unaffected by idiocy the Meles regime is an enemy of the country and her people”.

Meles has nothing to do with the ONLF issue. These cold blood terrorists were there during Mengistu (I can’t tell you that, you know better than me) and were there during Mengistu and will continue destroy governmental and public installation and kill more and more misery to their brothers like them who speaks the same language and to the rest of their other Ethiopian brothers and sisters. The political psychology of terrorism is of course declining but with such barbaric ignorant mercenaries will be there as long as idiots from yesterday failed to acknowledge the idiocy of these groups.

“Its soldiers kill and maim and serve the tormentors of Ethiopia. Why then should one cry if these soldiers get what they had been doling out to other people? Only “idiots” can cry foul”.

What do you meant when you said “got what they have been doing”? where? Are you talking in Somalia/Mogadishu or in Ethiopia? We don’t want get the soldiers to be murdered by mercenaries. If you think all soldiers in TPLF/ EPRDF are responsible for the massacre in Addis and elsewhere in Ethiopia, -that is not the case. Absolutely, not. Many fools accused all Tigrayans as TPLF and wrote a lot of nonsense on the Internet and told us to join the Eritreans as if we do not belong in Ethiopia as proud Ethiopians. So, all soldiers who were murdered by the terrorist and cold blood murderers are not murderers as many of you think.

“What do we say to those who proclaim even today we should prepare for the next election”?

I can’t tell you on my part what to tell the leaders of active opposition organization. If that is not the way to go, they better get out of being the “Hotel Guerrilla leaders” and started to show in the forest or something (?)I don’t what else). Other wise, idiots who serve Meles will continue celebrate their bloody Millennium until the next new soldier captured each of them and pay their prison due as their predecessors are paying their due inside their corrupted justice. It is sad, but as long as we keep disrespect the uneducated soldiers, the soldiers who are serving Meles to survive and feed their children unfortunately, the idiots will have it till some miracle abrupt to save the nation!

“In the Ethiopian context, the idiot tag is unavoidably going to stick especially to the so called doctors and professors whose overly concern with self interest has gone against the interest of the community and the country. Idiocy can wear intellectual garb too. A colorful doctoral “kaba” but coarse as poor man’s bernos. Ignorance is not always an involuntary misfortune. Quite a few of our strutting doctors and professors have prostrated themselves in front of the tyrant or the big power and betrayed the country–no need to name names. In their case, knowledge has turned sourly into ignorance and foolishness”.

Yes, I agree with you on this particular point. The so called PhD and the rest are the huge ” carcinoma-tumor” inside Ethiopia’s” brain” indeed obstacle pressure on the optical vision

“In the precise context of the quote that led to this article the idiots are those who shed tears for the dead soldiers of the regime”.

They are my Ethiopian brothers and sisters after all Ethiopian soldiers dying fighting external merci nary terrorists, no matter how they failed to understand the regime they served, they still are patriots for fighting and shooting at these thugs and blood thirsty terrorists that never slept thinking all night how to destroy Ethiopia and Ethiopianism. No one deserve to be called idiot for sharing sorrow for these soldiers. Absolute insanity.

What about the hundreds killed by the soldiers all over Ethiopia?

All the soldiers didn’t participate in such claim. If all are to be blame we too are with them to be blamed for failing to reach out our people. First all for failing to reach out the soldiers in an effective and attractive and convincing and mature method of approach.

“The question goes back to where we stand and with whom we stand. We cannot cry for the regime and also wail for the people”.

Crying for soldiers is not supporting Meles. When we said people- who are we talking about? Are not those soldiers Ethiopians part of the people too? are all the people who work inside Ethiopian offices, banks, power plants in every life of the nation, teachers, nurses all aspects of sectors and daily activity living and surviving under Meles system getting paid salary every month for what they do? Is it necessary the entire nation (70,000,000) counted as serving Meles just because they are in Ethiopia? Is it possible the entire population to leave the country so they will not be called “idiots” and leave Ethiopia for Meles for himself and for the ONLF and OLF? Every soldier is not criminal as every citizen is not as well criminal. If we follow every law written on earth, and every mistake done by each citizen and each of us, the entire world will end up in jail and the earth will be empty alone with no one remain to arrest (if at all there will be one left over- perhaps only God). -/-

  4. Thank you Hama Tuma.

This is an interesting and a timely piece going directly to the crux of the matter. My attention was caught particularly by the exposure of the disgusting selfish behavior of the so called educated group- doctors and professors. I would like to call them “parasite idiots.” The people in this group, as any other group, were educated by the tax payers of Ethiopia, who are largely poor. They were expected to the serve the people in return and improve their life. Instead they use their education and status to further exploit the poor people. By so doing, they keep the Ethiopian people poor and miserable. They remain as parasites on the Ethiopian people all their lives. They are also idiots because they do not seem to see the looming dangers of the political turmoil going on in the country. They are blinded by the short-term benefits they get only to fill up their greedy bellies. This part of their bodies seems to take over the functions of their brains. It can be predicted that the parasite idiots will take an opposite stand if the political pendulum swings the other side. However, unlike Hama, I am in favor of exposing these parasites (by the names, etc.) to the Ethiopian people in order to protect the people from further harm.

  5. So Comrade,

Who would have thought that a young firebrand like yourself would one day, old, retired and bitter, hail the slaughter of innocent workers?

Have you not committed the reactionary mistake allready, of stiking your hopes to the enemies of your people? One would have thought that supporting Somali irredentism and seeing your party smashed once, would be enough.

    But no, Comrade,
I could have told you a long time that not only have you misunderstood Marxism, but also the most fundamental points of how to make political analysis. If you only had listened to the masses, you would have been spared a lifetime of wandering through the swamps of revisionism. You could have been spared wasting your life, and the life of many of our Comrades, achieving nothing.

    But here you are Comrade,
And you are a useful idiot, to say the least. You are a useful idiot working for interests you will never understand, and your old comrades would be turning in their graves at hearing you, a representative of a party that was once progressive, hailing the murder of poor, oppressed Ethiopian workers.

  6. Hama Tuma did not hail the slaughter of workers.he was commenting on the soldiers killed by the ONLF.Then also Getachew and others have missed the whole point of the satirical article. As one friend in the eedn once said his satire is particular and offhand reading does not reveal perhaps the real message. Hama has attacked the ONLF as well as Meles but from what i understood his real focus was on idiots who betray their country and serve their stomachs as he said.

  8. Dear Hama Tuma,

As always you hit the nail on the head. Some in the oppostion has revealed a stunning lack of careful understanding concerning the struggle against tyrnical and repressive political institution. Any dictatorial regime employs the state’s “defense and security” establishment to protect it’s INTEREST in the name of the People and the Nation. Soliders and security agents who serve in that capacity are tools to safe guard the intersts of the ruling elites or the individual dictator, whether they are aware of it or not. The aregument by some,”condemn the war not the warrior” wil lead us into uncritically accept the rational the Meles regime and its cohorts paint themselves as the later day “defenders” of Ethiopian sovereignity and national interst. The recent debacle in the Ogaden deseret is a stark reminder of the debate and later appeasment by the usual suspects of the “WAR” between SHABIA & WOYANE in the so called border dispute not very long ago. Those who decry,”the slaughter of innocent civilians(?)or soliders” for that matter are devoid of the level of sophisticated inquiry.
Ethiopia has many enmies, foreign and local. ONLF IS NOT A NEW NEWS. IT’S INTENTIONS AND POLITICAL GOALS IS PUBLIC RECORD. IT WAS WAGING A LOW LEVLE GORILLA ATTACK AGAINST THE GOV’T OF ETHIOPIA UNTIL EVERY ONE WAKES UP TO THE RECENT EVENT. SURPRISE!SUPRISE! IT IS ONE OF THE MEMBERS OF AFD. CALL IT A”TERRORIST” ORGANIZATION OR AS YOU PLEASE, BUT DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SURGICALLY AVOID CALLING THE MELESE REGIME A TERRORIST STATE.TWO CRIMES, DOES NOT MAKE ONE IS RIGHT. How do you reconcile a state which terrorizes its “subjects”(CITIZENS?) and the men or women who do the states dirty work? To create a moral equvalence between the repressive state and its despotic leader in this case,MELES, and its critcs is a reckless joy ride in the name of Ethiopian nationalism.

    Best regards
    Tulu Forca

  9. I could not agree more on this article. I wish Idiots like Ben of Ethiopiafirst.com understand what we, in this blog get. Any reasonable person do not support the repressive regime of Ethiopia. The main reason people like Ben of Ethiopiafirst support this regime is because of personal gain they are receving from the government and the potential gain they will get in Ethiopia (i,e. free land ). I know this sounds far fetched, but the truth most of these people who looks reasonable and supporting the government are for their personal benefit. People who use lies and deceit to benefit themselves are our worst enemies. We should not take them seriously.

  10. Here again from me Getachew Reda- To brother Tullu Forea:

“ONLF IS NOT A NEW NEWS. CALL IT A”TERRORIST” ORGANIZATION OR AS YOU PLEASE, BUT DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SURGICALLY AVOID CALLING THE MELESE REGIME A TERRORIST”

First of reason for ONLF to operate low level guerrilla attack was not from its willingness to do it. It simply didn’t have the power and the force, the weapon, the public support to begin with. Therefore, it was forced to conduct a law level “SHIFTA” “outlaw entity” style operations as any individual or group of ten or so could operate the same low attack anywhere it wants to disrupt (if you recall the notorious Shiftas during the Monarch era could be so intimidating and could create havoc anywhere it chose to create havoc. so no of a difference with such demoralized groups limping for century conducting SHIFTA entity style operation. Any single person can create a havoc to thousand of residents acting as a million army if he carefully operate his atrocity and operation. So brother, there is nothing to be surprise seeing the usual terrorist operation and wanton murder aided, lead, trained and coordinated by EPLF forces similar to the same operation conducted with OLF lead road guide by the EPLF commandor Mekonnen in the 80s in the Oromo locality (Asosa-), carried a cold blooded murder by killing sick/patients in a Hospital and also gathering civilians in a school and hoses them with fire bullet and burned them down on fire and massacred hundreds while gathered together. Of course, surprise to those who forgot the records of the past. What surprised me is not such stupidity (it is always expected from frustrated terrorists who lack larger public support to their crime), but Meles Zenawi’s tolerance to his comrades of EPLF. (But, my hope is coming very clear this time, that he might whip his end rear since he is getting too much on his nerve. Not because Meles wanted it, but there are some few Ethiopians inside who are bitter about such craziness who wanted to end this adventurism of EPLF. Let us wait and see and argue with me later if such didn’t happen.

“IT IS ONE OF THE MEMBERS OF AFD. CALL IT A”TERRORIST” ORGANIZATION OR AS YOU PLEASE,..”

What else do you think people should call it than terrorist?

“BUT DO NOT ATTEMPT TO SURGICALLY AVOID CALLING THE MELESE REGIME A TERRORIST STATE”.

We already said that long time before you came to this forum and discuss remind us. But, be as it may, Ethiopians like me should not be ridiculed by opposition organizations or by any individual opposition citizen for calling the ONLF or OLF or EPLF a terrorists. We can call Meles a terrorist all we want, but that doesn’t give ONLF/OLF leaders a free way to act a terrorist act upon Ethiopia.

“How do you reconcile a state which terrorizes its “subjects”(CITIZENS?) and the men or women who do the states dirty work”?

A brilliant person like you should come our with a new strategy to save us all from such. But, I didn’t see it yet. We been talking 15 years now, I need a new strategists who can lead us. All of you are educated fellows, we need to se it in practice and we will follow you if it doesn’t repeat itself again over and over. let us hear the new strategy with out wasting time talking about moral. We have been talking about it for 15 years.

“To create a moral equvalence between the repressive state and its despotic leader in this case,MELES, and its critcs is a reckless joy ride in the name of Ethiopian nationalism”.

We need a new strategy that lead society to a new effective moral. You see brother, I have read many eloquent writers talking about many issues, none of them come out right so far. Let me tell you one thing; the erosion of political support to terrorists like OLF, ONLF and the rest of liberations all over the world in another countries is not an immediate cause decline in terrorist campaigns but the backlash of society against the violence, the cruelty and disruptive action of the terrorists. Acts of disruption and violence that are intended to attract favorable attention from a relevant public often have the opposite effect. It doesn’t mater how democratic and justifiable the action might be seen by educated or commentators or what have you…. if the violence directed against though to be innocent are particularly likely to provide backlash. Sympathy and support will automatically reduce by their allies and things slowly will work against the actors who committed violence act. Any violence requires a climate of acceptance to the level that such action should not disrupt the heart of the nation’s economic cores- such as burning oil installations, minerals, forests, ruining obelisks, burning trains, ship land-locking a nation illegally, blocking air and sea access by terrorist or anyone of a Lib ration Fronts no matter its cause -there will be a backlash within the group or from the society. If you remember what the Eritrean dissidents claim; it was this issue of backlash, questioning the leadership inquiry for an answer to how he lead them to such quagmire in the Badime war of the 1998. Backlash within the group that initially supported the terrorists’ cause is even more devastating to the militants than backlash among the larger public. If active support dries up, the group finds it increasingly difficult to attract new recruits, to get material resources, to find refuge among reliable sympathizers, or to avoid informants. So, that is why I am saying, any abruption of violence directed against public and governmental installations by guerrilla fighters claiming Ethiopian citizens are likely to create a backlash. Such violence murder in an oil or any installations could only be carried by foreign aggressors or mercenary groups. It this reason that we have to reticule such terrorist act. If I could give the Chinese and the Ethiopians an advice, they should send their lawyers to oversea and open a court lawsuit to shutdown their offices (the Hotel Guerrilla leaders’ offices) against those who claim spokes persons or agents in Europe, US, Canada offices of such Lib ration fronts who burned the oil research installation , kidnapped workers and security personnel’s to pay the price of murdering and destroying public and company property.

  11. afincha simeta ayen yalekesal endilu. keep going hama

  12. Mr. Getachew Reda seems to miss the crux of the issue. He has been teling us all along that the Islamists in Somalia do pose a threat to Ethiopia. Recent developments and events are disproving his views. The war in Somalia has nothing to do with protecting the interest of Ethiopia at all (be it long or short term).
Meles Zenawi of the EPLF or BUSH now, would not stand for the interests of Ethiopia because he is the notorious enemy of Ethiopia. Meles Zenawi is using the poor Ethiopian youth as cannon fodder to safeguard and serve foreign interests in Somalia. He has turned Mogadishu into a killing field where the lives of Ethiopians and innocent Somalis getting destroyed. Meles Zenawi has expended thousands of lives for the cessation of Eritrea from Ethiopia.
He has done the same thing to award territory to his former boss and mentor, Isaias Afewerki. I would shed
any tears to those who fell serving the brute tyrant Meles Zenawi. The genuine opposition should do political work in the army that is wrecking havoc in Ethiopia and Somalia. The unexpected benefit from the war of Bush and his servant Zenawi could be the demise of the latter. The Somali resistance should be a source of inspiration and lesson to the passive and submissive Ethiopians who are losing the gut to stand up against the enemy.

    Mr.Getachew see the stark reality

  13. Few decades back, we witnessed how few young people attempted to hijack an Ethiopian Airplane and killed in due course. Around the same time we also witnessed how others made it to Algeria. Few weeks back these ‘heroes and heroines’ were lauded in Finote and paltalks, while the anti-hijackers (who in fact were doing their duty of protecting innocent passengers) were either left unattended or were presented as bloodthirsty thugs. By today’s standard, no matter how much justifiable their goals are, these incidents and the many others that followed would have been qualified as bona fide “terrorist acts”. While we laud yesterdays ‘inhuman act’, do we have the moral competence (unless we are idiots) to condemn the recent ‘horrendous’ act in Ogaden. Do we have the zeal to say openly that the acts, then and now, be it state, party or front sponsored are acts of terrorism and the people who carried it are ‘culprits’. On the corollary, do we the gut to say that those who defend the ‘innocent’ from such acts, be they government, party, fronts or individuals, be given the due respect they deserve? Can we boldly stand for truth and say we should not allow ‘collateral damages’ no matter what our goals are? We have to be consistent in our outlook. Life has not always been and will never be black and white and we sustain our living in the gray and semi-dark zone. When we make our judgment we should at least be prudent, to the living and to the dead.

  14. Education devoid of patriotism and comapssion is the culprit. Energy should be redirected to incorporate these elements of social bonds in the curricula of Ethiopianism. We are in an era where even idiots could learn and be pushed to the next level of imbecility. In view of this, do we need to fold hands and be bystanders for the next election? No, because the election process is cyclical like day and night. We can not choose the day over the night or vice versa. Instead,we can identify the needs relative to this cyclic process, prioritize them and implement them to make the best out of this process. In my view, the 8 conditions put forward by CUDP need to be implemented first in preparation for the next election. We don’t have to waste precious time over whether idiocy is useful or not.

Ato Getachew ahs failed to grasp the crux of the problem. The American army in Iraq is not to be pitied but condemned.Any time some of hem get blown up we are not expected to cry and weep for them.Tjeir families can.Thye are there to aggress. The army in Ethiopia is the army of Mlees and the TPLF/EPRDF.It is not Ethiopian ,it is not gaurding the interest of Ethiopia. The Federals are not all Tigreans but they all serve Meles and kill people. If a truck full of Fderals/Agazi gets blown up, I will be happy. The same in the Ogaden. If 65 soldiers are killed I shall not grieve for them. This does not mean we support ONLF. When shabiya and weyane fought I was hoping they would destroy one another. Ato Getachew’s line leads nowhere but to supporting the Meles army on the ground that the soldiers are Ethiopian.Big time mistake mate as the British would like to say. 17. Dear Hama,

I like “idiots”, I mean your writing about “idiots”. I am not suprise to read some of comments, it reminds me the Chineses saying, “the tree, but not the forest” or vise verse.Let us expose Hodam of all sorts.

  18. This my other reply to Hailu Solomon from me Getachew reda.

I will quote “Ato Getachew ahs failed to grasp the crux of the problem. The American army in Iraq is not to be pitied but condemned.Any time some of hem get blown up we are not expected to cry and weep for them.Tjeir families can.Thye are there to aggress.
Dear SOAS College Student in London (of course you can’t be a teacher):

I like to advice you two things. Ask your teacher if Ogaden and Iraq has any similarity. The other thing, I need to advice you to learn how to use proper words, human words and avoid using terrorist words, street boy’s usage of words. In your script, you used the word “blown up”; I need you to stay away from using such word. When you used such words it automatically reveal readers to identify the concept of the person’s mind and wish, in some cases the identity of the person. That is how detectives find out who is who on line. Simply by following words, characters of usage. When you say, “no one is expected to cry when soldiers are blown up in Iraq”, your mind is choosing to use gruesome words such as your word “blown up” instead of proper and human way of usage of words.

When terrorists or their agents/sympathizers engaged in terrorist acts many of the time they use such gruesome form of terrorist word to explain the gruesome act of assassination/murder. Or if the user of such word is not a terrorist or their sympathizer, he/she should be on the opposite side of the other group who is fighting them. So your usage of improper word on your country men/women (in this sense your British brothers and sisters country fellow men/women- since your are living in England -which you did beg them and asked them to give you a shelter- now, it looks like you disregarded and for got all that begging, after they gave you a shelter, food, closing and education) revealed your shaky idiosyncratic quality on this matter. Next time ask your teacher (I assume you are not a teacher by simply judging your usage of improper word) which one is proper word to use when the British soldiers or American soldiers are massacred cruelly by terrorist assassin or by terrorist bombs. Ask your teacher which expression to chose between “blown up” or “massacred”. Will you?

  19. Dear Ethiopians:
I appreciate your concern about our country. All suggestions are commendable and hardly found an idiot. Idiots are those who kept silent, out of ignorance or self-centered interests while they can do better for the benefit of man-kind including themselves. It is not a problem to see facts from different angles the way we perceive them.
As a matter of fact, it is impossible to prescribe remedies to our ailments without diagnosing them stark naked in the examination room.
I can understand Hama Tuma found one major symptom that riddled our country, and the other specialist (Getachew Reda) discovered another one. In my view both conerns are legitmate and needs to be accommodated for a better outcome.
True, Woyane is a Cancer and needs to be removed surgically with most of the affected parts so that it will not get a chance to resurect and infected us again. At the same time, we cant deny the fact that the cancer was grown and fed by our own vessels and body parts. And we are not supposed to destroy all the vessels and parts which feed the cancer directly or indirectly while performing their routine jobs. If we do so we are prescribing a kill not a cure. And always cure takes the place of our choice. We can’t afford to sacrifice a limb because we are going to be the prime loosers.
In the realm of politics, Friends may give us the bulk of the lesson, but we shall not underestimate what we can learn from our enemies. TPLF would have never been seen the light of the day without granting pardon to the soldiers who submit themselves without resistance. In contrast the savage stance of EPLF towards the captives forced them to pay untold price.
Morality is another constraint we have to excercise too. What ever political motive behind it, butchering civilians can’t be taken as an alternative to justify evil. What happend in Ogaden is massacre and must be condemned by anyone who believes in human dignity. Destroying the economic life of the people ( especially in a poor country like Ethiopia) is outrageous act of terror that can not be tolerated.
I personally had been distrussed when I saw the distruction of Tekeze bridge by TPLF tugs. I do admire the decission of EPRP not to destroy the Blue Nile bridge even though there was an outside pressure and has some tactical advantage.
No body will argue on the fact that Woyane is malignant cancer that must be removed at any price. At the same time we can not bypass the horrendous evil act of ONLF as nothing was happened. A criminal is criminal. I can’t see any defference between Woyane and this rug-tug idiots of ONLF.
Blanket demonization of Ethiopian army is not fair and will not produce any good. We must remember there was men and women who paid their only life at the frontiers of their beloved country. We have no the moral foundation to hold their sacrifice in vain. We should understand why peoples joined the army. Whether it is voluntarily or forced there are reasons that we can’t ignore. Most volunteers join the military due to severe poverty and the immediate need to support their families. Once they land in the hands of TPLF notorious cadres they will be transformed into tools and it is not by choice. These guys have no alternative but to obey what their masters say or face the consquences. And remember we are in shortage of Belay Zelekes or Abdisa Agas’.
Equally, the opposition camp should also bear some responsibility for they are not working enough to infiltrate into the military, organize and give them directions so that they can be able to contribute something meaningful in the struggle to save the nation. Simply demonizing all is not fair and constructive.
We must cry in red for those poor civilian victims and our brothers and sisters who are unjustly exploited by the TPLF gangs. The real enemy is in an airconditioned palace in Addis intoxicated with abundant wealth and power, not in the unfriendly desert of Ogaden.
Please keep on enlightening us on matters that concern our country and our people. Thank you Hama Tuma to bring this soul searching issue which was in the minds of most compatriots. And my appreciation goes to Getachew Reda and other participants who come forward and contributed in many ways. Thanks for the civilized debate you took part.
    Long live Ethiopia

  20. could it be ato Getachew a case of tinish siga inde merfe tiwega? why the insult?why are you so angry and in such a hurry to insult me. This is low. I am not a student at SOAS for your information but a graduqte assistant and I am not a refugee too.Go smoke this in your place and please try to come out of that narrow Tigrean space you yourself once wrote as a character of “you people”.Do you get me? No wonder you misread Ato Hama!

  21. This is Getachew Reda: greetings to Mr Obang Ojilu
Nice to hear from you on such discussion. If I may ask (I need to discuss with you on this forum), are you by any chance Obang Ojilu related to one of the Anuak organization? If yes, which Gambela organization did you belong to? To the organization of “Obang O Metho”? or other organization. Brother Obang, – Just curious- why would you want to call me “the other Specialist “Getachew Reda”?

  22. From Getachew Reda- My secod response to you, to Hailu Solomon; You said

“I am not a student at SOAS for your information but a graduqte assistant and I am not a refugee too”.

Sorry! I didn’t know that you were a British/ English man by the name Hailu Solomon.I appreciated your bold decision. As brother Hama Tuma wrote on his new book Democratic cannibalism (African Absurdities III) “Bold decision by asylum seekers. The African dictators, not so be outsmarted by their fleeing citizens, are also planning extraordinary moves. Like applying to be members of the European Union since the so –called African Union is not working at all. Unity is strength and African countries that cannot be strong by uniting among themselves could be strong by uniting with Europeans. An African author has argued that Europeans in Africa are Africans while Africans in Europe are Europeans and on this basis millions of Africans living in Europe give their continent the right to apply to the European Union. And why not?” Sorry for calling you a refugee. I don’t mean to tell you as one of the Ethiopian fellows told me to “We like it out here, get out of my country America if you don’t like it out here”. He wrote such nonsense on Aigaforum.com and Ethiomedia.com for responding to my article that criticized how the Middle Class Ethiopian is so spoiled being extravagance renting a huge studio with a musical band for his/her child’s birthday (in some ways it was after few months of the child’s age coming to this world- They call it GELEB in Tigringa). Some also spent unbelievable huge amount of money for wedding accompanied by a musical band while family in Ethiopia are desperate for one meal a day). So got a reaction from one of them telling me “to move back to my country and leave his country America alone for him” Surprise, no really. I am hoping my brother Hama will write such on his next book (Ethioipan calling the other Ethiopian “Get out of my country America”.

Having said so, there is one thing that you need to remember. No matter what you suggested to me that you are not a refugee you are refugee on the eyes of the Europeans. Read Hama Tuma’s book, you will be educated by it (put your being assistance undergraduate to the side for a moment and open your eye and read his book you will learn more). You might not be equivalent to one of the African American journalist clearly declared, after two years in Africa, “ thank God my ancestors left the continent in chain”. But still regardless your assertion clearly stating -quote “ I am not refugee” and quo. Unless you are one of the “Beyalas” admirer/follower, to me you are still one of those refugees expressed in Hama’s book how the refugees came to Europe and elsewhere. Let me bring you back to Hama’s book mentioned above and learn something from it.

How many Africans have dies trying to make it to the USA and Europe? How many have bundled into trains and planes to be sent back? How many African refugees are doing slave level menial jobs in Europe and the USA? Forget the Beyalas who may feel European, but how many African intellectual migrants are cleaning toilets and standing guard over the property and dogs of rich white people?”

  23. For the sake of clarity, let me repeat briefly in my own way what others have already expressed.

I think the main theme of Hama’s commentary is to demonstrate how the Hodams react to events in Ethiopia, weighed against the support they give to the brutal regime led by Meles. His emphasis is that while the Hodams cry laud (making sure they are heard by Meles!) for the death of the Woyane soldiers at the oilfields in Ogaden, they are short of expressing any kind of reaction when the Agazi solders kill innocent unarmed Ethiopians (including children and the elderly) everyday all over the country. Are the Hodams fair? Isn’t the article leaving them exposed? Very well, indeed.

In my view and many others, the regime presently ruling Ethiopia is illegitimate. Not only that, it is also a stooge for neocolonialist powers, day by day threatening the very survival of the country. Anything, that helps to strengthen this regime should counteracted while at the same time working to strengthen the power of the people. There should not be middle ground, unless one is ‘parasite idiot”, like the Hodams.

    Finally, two requests for Hama:

    1. Do not reserve yourself from naming names; it is up to the Hodams to take care of the outcome. This will be a great service to the Ethiopian people.
    2. Make your future articles are a little easier to be understood by the average reader. I think some of the negative comments given by a few readers of the present article are due to the lack of a clear understanding of its core message.

    Thank you.

  24. Dear Warka: from me Getachew Reda-

We ‘constrictively criticized someone who needed it (the subject in this case is HODAM), when our real motive was to win a useless argument. Or, the person (the subject- the HODAM) not being present in soul, we thought we were helping others to understand him, when in actually our true motives was to feel superior by pulling him down (the public knows already who the HODAM is for the last 15 years). Trying to expose a person when he is sitting morning at a right place for the right victim where all of us including the subject (the HODAM) felt morn, sad, cry, hurt …his sympathy should not be exploited to expose his other weaknesses at such sensitive matter and time.

There are many ways to expose him/her, if we want the HODAM to be exposed, not on such sensitive time. For fact, because we hate the Emperor’s soldiers or the Emperor and his war cabinets, we can’t expose the soldier’s weakness or the king’s weaknesses when the soldier is actively engaging with Italian fascist army or with any foreign mercenary. There are times, situations we need to stay away from exploiting, for fear of backlash from society who are as you putted it “AVERAGE READER”.

  25. Dear Getachew Reda
Thanks for your openness again. Blieve me I am not trying to be sarcastic – because I know the truth sets me free. I called you specialist in comparative terms. I am an ordinary BALAGER Ethiopian who is not well versed in politics. To tell you the truth, I even did not know you who you are but, your name is not new for me. I do have been reading some of your papers. Therefore, in comparision with me I considered you possessing a better understanding of politics and a sense of patriotism. That’s why I call you specialist. I said the word “other” because I know Hama Tuma is also one of the pioneers of Ethiopian politics. Please don’t get me wrong.
As you may guess I am from Gambella Ethiopia. I don’t belong to any political organization but that doesn’t mean I don’t care about my country Ethiopia. I belong to anything ETHIOPIAN.
    With Respect.

  26. Dear Hama

There was a very extended debate about “useful idiots” in one African forum ,where I participated. That time Mr. Berlusconi used this word to attack Romano Prodi and now it appears in Ethiopian review . Please check this one .

  27. My last post from GETACHEW REDA
    My dear brother Obang Ojilu:

I thank you very much for your kind words. It is been a pleasure to have Ethiopian brothers like you who liked my views. I also want to conclude telling my readers, that I respect and know brother Hama Tuma than some of the people who came here on this forum to react on my comments. Regardless what my reaction here on his last commentary, my brotherly and comradely relation will still there solid as ever (that I want to assure you all who might thought it will hampered) until our common goal reach the target (that is to see our people free from BANDA leadership, narrow ethnic politics and narrow human relations). Finally, I like to appreciate to all of you on this forum engaged both side of the aisle who expressed your thoughts and minds and love for humanity, your nation and the people. See you on other issues and commentaries. I love you all!!! Ethiopia will prevail!!

  28. Ato Getachew your argument is anchiw tamechiw anchiw tarochiw. Yo impled that I was a refugee and I informed you I am not. I carry an Ethiopian passport and you do not have to be British to work at SOAS if you want to know. I still inist you have missed the point of Hama/by the way I have read some of hs books though I may not share his political leaning/. Good bye for now.

  29. I am Getachew Reda-Look,brothe Hailu:I thought this was my conclussion, let me comment one more time.

you said “I still inist you have missed the point of Hama/”

I didn’t see you encountered all my reaction to his comments? I can tell you that right now. Try it one more time and answer them. They are easy to read, they are there presented with question mark. You are a professor answer them.

I told you over and over to the readers and you- that, I know brother Hama and his wish and mission and a positive eefort to his country better than you know him. I am challenging his view because, I am not like the TPLF Hodams that hesitate to react when leaders, scholars, authors and educated sectors spoke or wrote wrongs. They are humanbeings, they do mistakes, they wrote/spoke mistakes, at time verey very elementary wrongs ( read the book why smart people do stupid things); so, as a grass root members, we have to be brave and have the gut to challenge their wrongs. If you don’t they will continue doing stupid things over and over and might lead them to their demise (to their country as well).

I am sure he will like my reaction be it he accepted I was wrong or right for simple fact that I was able to react and told him what I thought in the public apart our healthy brotherly and comradely relationship. There is nothing bitternes or animosity between us. It is politics, we are in the front batteling common enemy, so we do make mistakes, when we do spoke or do wrongs, it is natural to show a reaction in the middle of the battle. Only weak people with no experience think such as yourself- as if such reaction opned to bit who win the debate. No one in his healthy mind think Getachew Reda with my avarage reading capacity, the maximum political knowledge my mind could accomodate be equivalent to Hama’s knowledge and experience. So please do not come to compare my reaction as if i am here to combat with Hama. But to be example to show the public able to stand leaders when they do spoke/wrote wrongs say “You are wrong” – with this I say to brother Hailu- Good luck in England, I also visited your school, it is nice one of the the outstanding school (ranks 6th in the UK- is it?)

  30. Thanks Hama. Unfortunately, it was easier to read Joyce’s Ulysess than your piece. There are a couple of things that I want to comment on though. First, defining idiocy. Despite your reference to the etymology of the word, your definition of the term is nothing more than “somebody is an idiot because I call him an idiot.” Nothing wrong in having such a definition except it would have been more honest if you had been clear about it. Having such a definition, you seem to spare no one from the current state and recent past of Ethiopia. You know that an overbroad analytical category is not useful at all. Let me try an alternative definition and living in America I like the standard of the American pragmatists. With such a standard, I would say that whosoever fails in getting what he set out to get is an idiot. Reversing this whosoever succeeds in getting what he sets out to get is a genius. Perhaps an evil genius, but still a genius. By that standard I would say Mengistu was a genius until he was beaten in the game by the Woyane. And I believe the Doctors and Professors that you make fun of do still have a great chance of being judged geniuses if what they set out to get – the transformation of Ethiopian politics from that conspiratorial backroom deal making and backbiting as well as violent gun totting to one of grassroots, open, hopeful and nonviolent engagement – comes to pass. Even if that does not happen in a year or two, they have set something in motion and that in my dictionary is still genius.

  31. Getachew Reda to Mr dawit:
“conspiratorial backroom deal making and backbiting as well as violent gun totting to one of grassroots, open, hopeful and nonviolent engagement – comes to pass. Even if that does not happen in a year or two, they have set something in motion and that in my dictionary is still genius.”

Who are the “they” you are talking about? They have set something in motion and that is still genius” Are you refering to TPLF/EPRDF that they are still genius? if your reply is “yes”, you are tellling us Franko of Spain was genius for setting the same election? What is your guarantee to us in a year or two the work of the genuis will come true? If that is not going to happen in a year or two when is fair to call it “genius”?

  32. Actually, by the use of the pronoun you quoted, I was referring to those that are in jail. That, notwithstanding, I would not mind calling the leaders of the TPLF , or for that matter,Franco, or Botha, geniuses. Mind you, “genius” is not a moral term. It is neither good, nor evil. It is the particular way in which it is used that will turn it into either good or evil. Now coming to the application of the term for Ethiopian politicians, I would say the record is clear that the TPLF has so far been having its way. Nothing to be gained by denying that fact and piling useless invectives on its leaders, members or anyone who works with the regime in power. One of the serious mistakes that opponents of the current regime repeatedly commit is that of underestimating the “genius”, organizational strength, military/security might, and ideological appeal that the regime posseses. If the opposition is really serious about changing the nature of the game, may be it is time to stop calling the other side “DEDEBOC” “HODAMOCH” “GOSEGNOCH” “TEBABOCH” “ZEREGNOCH” “BANDOCH” and the thousand other “OCHs” and seriously discuss what their strength might be.

  33. This Getachew again for Dawit-Dawit_ you said “Nothing to be gained by denying that fact and piling useless invectives on its leaders, members or anyone who works with the regime in power”

I am glad you are here to discuss with me, I was looking for someone from TPLF to come here and discuss with me , her eyou are- let us go and start it. The Ethiopian government does not respect the basic human rights of many of its citizens. Police and security forces have harassed, arbitrarily and illegally detained, tortured, and in some cases, killed members of the political opposition, demonstrators, and suspected insurgents. Thousands of suspects remain in detention without charge, and lengthy pretrial detention continues to be a problem. Prison conditions are poor. The government often ignores citizens’ privacy rights and laws regarding search warrants. Journalists have been arrested, detained, or punished every year since TPLF came to power; the government continues to restrict freedom of the press. The government limits freedom of assembly, or ban particularly for members of opposition groups, and security forces have used excessive force to break up demonstrations and massacred hundreds. Violence against women continue to be problem, many times courts let go free violent intruders who committed aggression against women to only end up came back for similar crime. The economic and sexual exploitation of children continues, as does human trafficking. Forced labor, particularly among children, is a persistent problem. Low-level government interference with labor unions continues. The ruling party TPLF landlocked Ethiopia illegally in favor to its x- comrades (the Eritrean Guerilla fighters –The Arab Mercenaries).

Mr. Dawit: is such claim useless or legitimate? Can anyone in his/her normal mind accuse anyone who expressed his bitterness, anger on leaders who are responsible or committed such treason and crime? How could you told us it is useless to reveal and talk about express anger, or lash out at those members who collaborated or trying to minimize such national treason and human rights crime as if insignificant to protect the responsible mercenaries? Are you out of your mind? Do you know whom the people TPLF is holding in a rat and snake invested prisons? Have you seen Professor Mesfen Weldemariam’s face turning pale/yellow/weak- because of lack of sunshine? Those are icon of the nation that TPLF is murdering them in such horrendous situation. Is this useless claim? What could have been legitimate claim for you than this?

  34. Dawit,

Accordingly, in your book, any mass killer like Hitler, Ida-Amin, Mengistu, Saddam Hussein, Mussolini, or Cho Seung-Hei is a genius. There is no moral dimension (good or bad) of humanistic nature in your assessment. Why not you include dangerous animals or natural disasters like tsunami in your book too. What a twisted mind. I think you are trying to justify your symbiotic relationship with the killer regime in Addis. It does not work- it is too late. The regime has committed a crime against humanity by behaving inhumanly and those responsible for the crime will be brought to justice. That is the only option left. Ethiopians are part of the human society.

  35. Sir, you are confusing issues here. Our discussion was on the use of the term “idiots,” my contention being that you cannot on the basis of the demonstrated fact, call those in power in Ethiopia “idiots.” Now you are raising the issue of human rights abuses. This takes our exchange to a different level. The facts that you recited are well known and publicized for me to comment upon. The question is, as Lenin would have it, “WHAT IS TO BE DONE?” There are a lot of things that can be done, but the first thing that should be done (and for this Hama and his comrades can vouch) is making an accurate assessment of the objective conditions prevailing – which includes the strengths of ones opponents and the weaknesses of oneself. There is one other thing that should precede this assessment – that is keeping your cool. You may be enraged by the fact, you may despair etc etc but you never allow your emotion to cloud your judgment. Otherwise, you will keep on bumping on solid side of the wall without noticing the crack in the wall (Lenin again).

  36. Hey Warka,

Look at the dictionary definition of “genius”

    Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) – Cite This Source
    gen·ius /ˈdʒinyəs/
    1. an exceptional natural capacity of intellect, especially as shown in creative and original work in science, art, music, etc.: the genius of Mozart.
    2. a person having such capacity.
    3. a person having an extraordinarily high intelligence rating on a psychological test, as an IQ above 140.
    4. natural ability or capacity; strong inclination: a special genius for leadership.
    5. distinctive character or spirit, as of a nation, period, or language.
    6. the guardian spirit of a place, institution, etc.
    7. either of two mutually opposed spirits, one good and the other evil, supposed to attend a person throughout life.
    8. a person who strongly influences for good or ill the character, conduct, or destiny of a person, place, or thing: Rasputin, the evil genius of Russian politics.
    9. genie (defs. 1, 3).

    Do the math, man.

  37. 1. idiot or genuine. The fact is those words are suppose to express the leaders and their collaborators. So we are talking about the subject. We are trying the leader who is an idiot. If someone calls Meles an idiot in Ethiopia, he will be murdered, not out here. Michael Moor calls his country “The Idiot Nation” and Michael Savage calls his country “The Savage nation”. Whatever that word you want to waste time explaining, we have to focus at those who subjects the word tended to describe. So here we are describing them so where is that I am confusing issues. From No Dawit; don’t play with words here. You might play games to define what is there, you tried to preach us how strong army, how what have you. What have you what have you,….and legitimate those illegitimate leaders are and what comparatively with the oppositions. Therefore, I replied to you, the army or the leaders you described are notoriously nasty, mercenaries and murderers who committed national treason. Now, you tend to scream at me when I push the real button. Here again what you said. “Sir, you are confusing issues here. Our discussion was on the use of the term “idiots,” my contention being that you cannot on the basis of the demonstrated fact, call those in power in Ethiopia “idiots.” Now you are raising the issue of human rights abuses. This takes our exchange to a different level”. Yes, I am raising the Human rights abuse worst than the words (idiot, genuine) what you are trying to play . Because you are trying to waste time and energy by playing words. The nation is lead by full of idiots, therfore, anytime idiots playing words to coverup core issue, we have to expose their idiocity in public.
    2.
You even said that “The facts that you recited are well known and publicized for me to comment upon. The question is, as Lenin would have it, “WHAT IS TO BE DONE?” There are a lot of things that can be done, the first thing is arrest Meles for treason, murder, and for electoral theft. The other thing needed to be done is teach the real history of their country to all the Hodams and collect all the HODAM colaboratored clambing their hands to show their ignorance when their Idiot-in -chief Mels Zenawi told the Hodams Ethiopia is a hundred years old and teach them their country Ethioipaia is older than the Mels Zenawi’s father. Then only then, Ethiopia will progress. The Hodams are the real threat of Ethiopia. And that is where we have to focus before engaging Our Idiot-in- chief in Ethiopia. So let us discuss why you are supporting mercinary leadership? And what do you think Meles and his leadership should get for the Human rights abuse you already aknowledge as a problem? Don’t think that must be the strating point for the “what should be done?

  38. You see readers? This is what I was talking about? The HODAM (the KERSAM-Huligani) comes here started to act as a gentleman who wants to discus: unfortunately, when he knew the bell of truth wrings on his ear, he started to act funny and went on to waste his time for cover up by defining vocabularies what the dictionary have to say about the words that describe his leaders. As you read me, I was trying to engage him why he wanted to be one of the protectorate and defender of the mercenary leaders in Addis Ababa who committed treasons, power and human rights abuse; he had no answer but to run away like a spooky hyena his mouth talking about “different dictionary”. The other day a fellow from Englad who told doesn’t give a rat’s ass if self massacres the soldiers in Ogaden proclaimed ONLF who are anti Ethiopian sovereignty and told me he is not refugee but passport holder. Playing with words. The same similar another fellow comes here again yesterday, pulling dictionary wasting his time to explain to us what is idiot what is not excluding the “subject” out of the debate. It is indeed sad. These Kersams do not give a rat’s ass about power and human rights abuse issue. Believe me brothers and sisters- I engaged with many of them when I get the chance to catch them, MaaaN…..! They don’t last too long. They hide away and melt like a snow wanted to talk how many artists they will be in Sheraton Hotel in the upcoming millennium.

It also comes as no surprise to many of us, that the KERSAM, who love revel in their stupidity, would “elect”/defended the anti democratic seed/ anti Ethiopia seed who thinks Ethiopia is not a nation but collection of nations with hundred years old established by “Neftenga”. This similar to Bush’s knowledge of Africa when he said in his briefing paper Africa is a nation not a continent. In our glorious land sadly there are plenty of natures that they deny tomorrow is going to be the Day of Judgment. What can one say? The people are the once paying the misery for such “KERSAMS” to dance and drink whisky as the Derg lampoons used to enjoy. I am hoping he will come back with another nick name to touch the subject/the question imposed for him to answer them and run away like the spooky heyena again.WEY ALEMETADEL! WEY AGERE.

  39. Idiocy in its pathological sense has as its inner kernel narcissism. Narcissistic behavior has and more of the following attributes “arrogant, proud, shrewd, confident, self-centered and determined to be at the top” and is executed at the expense of others. Who exactly depicts these cues, signs and symptoms will be stating the obvious. When narcissism blends with politics, the outcome is pathological and its effect disastrous. For instance a person who suffers from this malady will see the “non present danger” as a ‘clear and present danger” and the windmills as giants. This is not mere idiocy, but idiocy with delusion of perception operating under the framework of ‘pathological disorder”.

What Hama did was to cluster those who sacrifice collective interest to their own individual self-interests under the term Idiot. What Hama did was to isolate those ‘whose survival is locked in the preservation of their own self at the cost of others”. What he did was to profile those ‘who think by their belly and not their mind”. If my understanding is correct, what Dawit did was to describe a rational being that sustains on maximizing its return. Here rationality is not used in the sense of “all men are rational”. No it is used to describe the western l’homo-economicus man as a rational man that is egoistic, uncooperative, self-centered and ‘scientific’ in his outlook. What is debatable is the epistemological overlap of the terms i.e rational, Hodame, Idiot and genius. Was it the genius, the idiot or the rational man or blend of all these three which was described as ‘Hodame”? To find a genius, who is rational and Hodame and like wise a rational man that is genius and yet an idiot, or probably a useful idiot, we have to go and search the annals of Nazis and Soviet era documents and make some headcount there. HODAMOCH is more inclusive term at the same time ‘pathological”. It includes the rational and irrational, the idiot and the non-idiot (not only the genius) and describes people who operate under the law of zero-sum game and ascertains their existence by eliminating others. The problem comes looking idiots from the point of geniuses. Genius and Idiot could be contradictory terms but not contrary. HODAMOCH is used here as contrary to “NON-HODAMOCH’ . In other words “Useful Idiots” as contrary not to “Non-useful idiots”, but as “useful non-idiots”. The contradictory terms of ‘Idiot-genius’ cannot explain the “hodam-nonhodamoch continuum’ for it precludes the concept of negation. As a continuum we could profile people of diifrent sorts with different degrees of Hodaminet.
Hodaminet (as a “nut”) is not a single trait locked temporally and spatially, it is a personality. When a person consistently shows “A dominating, exploitative use of others” then we may clearly diagnose and see the prognosis of such personality disorder. It is very unlikely that a “Hodame” of yesterday would behave differently today. That ‘Hodaminet” finds its flesh and blood in “Ato Sewyew” of Hama’s other book.

    Thank You

  40. Dawit,

I appreciate your effort of taking extra miles to prove your point. You are trying hard to defend what cannot possibly be defended. Downplaying the horrendous crimes committed by your client, Meles, knowingly or unknowingly, is tantamount to considering Ethiopians as less than humans.

As far as I am concerned, Meles and the other members of his group are tools of the west (primarily of the US and UK). They were recruited and placed in power with the help of the west, and since then, they have been supported and instructed by the west. In this case, the real geniuses, ie., the evil type, are the officials of the west who control the Meles group. Meles and his associates are simply a destructive robots or dummies sitting there to follow the instructions of the west. So, they can be considered idiots as Hama has defined in his article. By being so, they have caused enormous damages to human lives and properties, as you are aware, without giving a second thought about its consequences. For example, look at what they are doing in Somalia now- it is totally insane. Sooner or latter they will pay for all this (but the west and their idiocy have blinded them even to see this reality). It is shame there are some Ethiopians (labeled as Hodams) who try to justify their inexcusable actions for small benefits (ferefari) at the cost of the suffering masses.

  41. I would have let this rest, but I guess I could not resist the urge to take one more shot. So let me respond to Getachew, Mume and Warka. I will start with the easiest one – Getachew. I am sorry so to say but your ranting reminds me of the saying that “the empty vessel makes the most noise.” Without impugning your intellect, I don’t think I will be far off the mark if I say that either you don’t understand what I am trying to say, or you don’t have a better argument to forward. Again, without impugning your intentions too, your accusations (bordering on a virtual trigger happiness), not only amuses me, but is also worrisome to me. You may remember that one of the most effective technics that the FBI used to dismantle radical movements of the ’60s, such as the Black Panter Party, was by having them infiltrated by its agents who appearing to be more radical were at the forefront of stifling new ideas and discussisons from emerging, thus ultimately leading members (actual and potential)to shun away from the organizations. Most probably, you are not doing that, but by insulting and accusing people who differ from you viciously, you may be having the same effect.

To Mume, I have to say that from a purely epistemological position, your argument and conceptual classification may be valid. Ultimately, however, the question is whether such arguments and conceptual classifications are liberating. I fail to see this liberating effect in classifying leaders of the current regime and those working for the regime as “idiots” and “hodams”. It actually constrains one’s freedom for critical thinking and reflection. Let me give you an example. Recently, we have three former judges working under the regime come out with evidence of the workings and findings of the commission to investigate the repression of the protests following May ’05. For 15 years or so these individuals were considered as “hodam” and all of a sudden they are to be viewed as ‘heroes”. I see intellectual laziness and fuzziness in this type of conclusions. May be if our political leaders and analysts had carefully studied the alignment of forces in Ethiopia, who benefits and who losses, who is actively promoting “revolutionary democracy” and who is silently defying, if they had come out with a conceptual classification that would have encouraged and embraced the millions of Ethiopians who have actually to live under the regime and for not every day is a Ginbot 7, may be we would have a less ridiculous classification of people that basically says that nearly everyone in Ethiopia is “HODAM” and almost everyone in the diaspora who is not an active member of the TPLF is a “NON-HODAM”.

To Warka, I have to ask whether you have considered the full implications of your argument. You are saying not only that Ethiopians are not only ruled by idiots, but in fact they are being ruled by idiots who are mere robots. Leaving out the rulers and the puppet masters out for the moment, what does that say about the people who are ruled? This kind of ties to what I write to Mume, that we need to be more analytically rigorous in the terms that we use, lest it be said of us “BALUAN GODAHU BILA…..”

It was a nice discussion, but perhaps we should be moving to something more substantial than semantics.

    Thanks all.

  42. Again from GETACHEW REDA TO DAWIT
There is a Tigringa proverb that might be difficult to exactly put it the way the Tigringa translated it, but your silly response is mare nothing than what the Tigribga says it “ A toothless person takes the first shot to laugh at you before you laughed at him, for fear he might be called a toothless, to only end up showing his toothless gum”. Indeed, your argument didn’t have the answer I posed to you.

Going to the history of the Black Panther and FBI connection hotchpotch trick is not going to relieve you from the hook. Bringing the 60’s failed example showed your illiteracy of the situation as Booker T.Washington’s view said to ignorant like you who is simply good at grammar and empty from inside “Blacks had tried to walk before they had learned to crawl. Illiteracy”….” To any movement, be it the Black Panther/ by FBI or your TPLF/EPRP by underground opposition group agents can’t be weakened or vanished as you illiterate mind tried to compare it. Any organization failed or goes to its demise not because of infiltration, but because as Booker T. Washington said “ ..tried to walk before they had to crawl. Therefore, your childish “SEM INNA WERK” (GOLD & WAX”) shows only in your part did extra effort to run away from the questions I presented to you. I still invited you- don’t run away- I have presented your government’s (TPLF/EPRDF) weakness and crime for you to admit it and discuss them with us. If you still want to run away and conclude every thing that I presented to you to answer them was as you said “Easy” without answering the Human right questions and treasonous issues committed by your party: – then, I can only say to you- your hotchpotch doesn’t deserve to reply than to conclude it “a mule dressed in a tuxedo is still a mule”. To tell you the truth, I challenged and still I am going to challenge them in the future, many ignorant poets, politicians, grammar badgers, extremists, -many of their arguments are the same empty bags as yours. Stay and challenge me in Ethiopian politics, history- I am willing here to discuss with you. Don’t you run! Ethiopins don’t run. They confronted enemies; if they failed they failed face to face not facing their back to the enemy. YENAKT YSREGIZAL. The Tihgrainga word “ ZinaaQkayo YeTinis”. I must say, Ethiopia is pretty fed up of your types, be it in the Meles group or the opposition. I don’t know When Ethiopia will be free from these middle class HODAM opportunists and tricky elements, but, the grass root need to stand up and take a new course from depending these lost confused middle class English speaking entire HABESHA. I tell you, it is time to say NO! to those middle class mediocre dragging my nation for ever bargaining to their stomach.

  43. THE DISCUSSION ON VOA
    FROM GETACHEW REDA-

There was a discussion held on VOA (I just listened it today) Amharic news program between Lieutenant Ayalsew Dessie, Ato Berhanu Mewa and Ato Lidetu Ayalew hosted by Ato Addisu of VOA Amharic program. As you might have judged their discussion among them, regarding their deliberation of their positions/arguments and ethics: I as individual listener, I was stunned by the disorder and rudeness that was heard from the mouth of Ato Lidetu Ayalew the member of the TPLF/EPRDF Parliament from Addis Ababa. He was totally restless, agitated, unnecessarily argumentative, moving away from the center of the argument. Most of all when Ato Addisu the host of the program from VOA Amharic tried to address questions to each guests, Ato Lidetu kept jumping in between, disrupting the host’s genuine intention. He was looking every minute excuse to heal his guilt when he felt a genuine confrontation caught him. Most of all, when Ato Addisu (the host) still tried to correct/retract his honest intention that which Ato Lidetu asked to Ato Addisu to retrieve back that some of the phrases forwarded by the host which Ato Lidetu didn’t like it:- he was so tempered, angry at the host immaturely than to ask gently or politely to correct what was mistakenly said by the host. Out of our culture, Ato Lidetu kept calling the host, “ANTE”, out of temper ness, and some times “ANTU”. The host was so gentle (I truly admired him) still called Ato Lidetu ATO, ANTU; -IRSIWA regardless Ato Lidetu was acting rude and disruptive. Can any one expect from such fellow genuine leadership when he simply failed to demonstrate the common Ethiopian respected culture of respect to each other when one is invited as a leader to conduct discussion of a national matter that knowing such is going to be aired?
I like to also say I was so happy by the two other guests Leutnant Ayalswe Dessie as I always have great respect for him. I respect should also go to Ato Berhane Mewa for handling all the questions forwarded to him to answer them from both sides. Most of all he exposed Ato Lidetu Ayalew’s weak point and premature in many ways, by demonstrating his gentle Ethiopian manner and being patient. Generally, my admiration goes to Ato Addisu, Lieutenant Ayalsew Dessie and Berhane Mewa for conducting such national matter handling the disruptive and temperedness of Ato Lidetu.–/-

  44. Dear Hama as usual thank you keep up the good Job, after I said this

To Getachew lets read very carefully the message what Hama said for example
“For every sane Ethiopian who is unaffected by idiocy the Meles regime is an enemy of the country and her people. Its soldiers kill and maim and serve the tormentors of Ethiopia. Why then should one cry if these soldiers get what they had been doling out to other people? Only “idiots” can cry foul. But then, why are they deemed useful? Because they teach by their idiocy?”
We shouldn’t get up tight or duel on this issue, if not it is impossible to do everything people want you to do where as if you are not driven by guilt you spend your entire life running from regrets hiding your shame, guilt driven people are manipulated by memories Besides Getachew could u please write
    Short and to the point

  45. Getachew Reda’s article or call to the Weyane to prosecute Elias Kifle is published in the weyane web site aigaforum. This is enough proof of where Getachew stands. With the Weyane. He is just trying to hide his face.He is a common Tigrean gottegna!

  46. To ABEGAZ from GETACHEW

I enjoyed reactions from cults like your yourself. Let me borrow Lideto Ayalew’s word given to people like you “CHIFIN” he should have include with it together “AMLAKI.’

I find you reaction not as adult but less than a child’s reaction. I don’t rant; I talk and write what I feel in my mind. I did this for years, even before EPRP existed, before even EPRP thought you political or administrative theory. So, you think, I will be shy because you react as a child to defend Hama Tuma? Common now, you know better than that, why should I hide from my shame? If I tried to hide my shame why would I expose my self to a child like you in such open Internet and forum for years? I never had hide, or will never hide my self from any one including from a child like you? I have no reason to hide, for a simple reason I don’t have a hostage or blood on my hand.

If you think, what you paste from his article and quoted him what he said about the Ethiopian soldiers for me to understand it and retract my position, then what you should have done was “paste the phrase as it was written and translate that/break that phrase that in to simple English and sentences for me to understand it, if in case you think I am a normal average reader” Easy! You see that is how you should open a discussion with me if you wanted to defend Hama’s position, instead of using a proven failed old TPLF’s type of psycho logic of terror and intimidation to shut my mouth and my liberty to from criticize any article or leader when I feel they are wrong. I don’t care who you are as EPRP cult or as none EPRP individual, you can debate with me; to do that you don’t have to attack me that I am hiding my guilt or what ever crap you wanted to pull as your shield to defend Hama. If I have a guilt it is exclusively mine and only mine not EPRP”S, OLF”S, ONLF”S or any one else. You don’t need to be EPRP”S ANGEL to threat Getachew Reda in order to stop my pen. TPLF cadre did that for you years back, in the hope to stop my pen for fear of psychological intimidation as you are using it now a tool of intimidation.

No, people tried that before you, they failed to stop me. You should learn that by now that I am not such a man to kneel for EPRP’s cult or OLF’s or nay one for fear my name is going to be tarnish on EPRP’s Debteraw.com forum. You see, I was not born when EPRP or OLF or any cult was born. I was born before all of them came to live and been through difficult life, which gave me the courage to challenge any terrorizing verbal campaign against me or any one of whom I respect. So, your scam bag of psychological intimidation is not going to work now just because some one selected you to combat me. Don’t you worry, I will be here with you, I am not going nowhere regardless you come with any thing you want to intimidate me. If intimidation or tarnishing of my image you think is going to stop my pen—— boy! You are a new comer!

Talk adult, if you want to debate and defend Hama Tuma. Try to break the phrase you quoted him and simplify it to a simple message. Then only then will have civilized discussion. Otherwise, using TPLF’s old way of attacking adversary is not going to work for you. Because, people and some cults from different organizations did tried such attack and didn’t them good. The more they come harder, they fall real bad. I am an individual- you have to understand that- EPRP leaders are leaders of an organization, – I have the right to combat their views, if you feel I have no right to that and you prefer to sort it out personal, then be my guest –but I guarantee you I will be more stronger and harder, you will be my witness as the rest before you did witnessed my survival. -/-

  47. Dear readers; I like to conclude my final discussion regarding Hama’s article and my reaction to that. First of all, as I said it before repeatedly, my reaction to brother Hama’s commentary has nothing to do challenging his knowledge or confronting his decency to Ethiopian good wish or for that matter to the Ethiopian poor soldiers. My reaction was simply a decent one that I thought such sensitive issue at a sensitive time when all of us and surrounding us is taken as enemy and surrounding by languorous situation might send a wrong message and wrong signal. It was a simple decent reaction. That was all to it.

I have known Hama in person and his heroic ands dignified works for a long a time now from reading his messages, books, poems, and interviews and as well in person and communication through emails when I need his advice on certain issues regarding our struggle. So, you can imagine that I am not a strange person to him and to his dignified works for me to know which Hama Tuma stand for. But, I have to show him what he advised me to do. His advice was not only to me but also to all Ethiopian people. I remember he said “ the grass roots must learn start to ask and challenge its civic and political leaders when they see situations, messages, press releases and messages uncomfortable to them” “ If the grass root/the people do continue let its leaders loose without confronting or debate their messages out openly to be shaped and fit right, the struggle will be long and corrupt. And the corrupt leaders will continue to be corrupt with out learning their mistakes revaluated, that is unhealthy for healthy social change” (of course, such is not word to word, but a phrase to that effect). So, that is what I am doing when I react his piece. Unfortunately, we are too feudalistic society and when we see someone from our side stood and react to its leaders or known icons of our nation- the community started to panic and started to slander the person who stood to react as he/ she is going to run away to the other side of the aisle as KEDATENGA (Man Yawqal).

Now, I really don’t blame too much of this on some people. It is us, it is the we are. Hama on his book “Democratic Cannibalism- African Absurdity III” on page 151 has a section about us the Ethiopian’s character under a title Ethiopianese of Paranoia and the Ethiopian Psyche”. On that he said, “…….’Man Yawqal’ , a simple “who knows?”that the forever warped the Ethiopian psyche and stamped “paranoiac” on his or her soul. Who knows or Man Yawqal is actually a question. It is rhetorical and replies to itself that no one really does know anything. Anything is possible: it is dangerous and mysterious world out there, beware. And the Ethiopian, as we all know, is very keen on warnings; we love mysterious, we pretend to have secrets since we presume possession of some secrets gives us importance. There is another side to the whole paranoia sense with “YALTERETERE temenetere”/ he who is not wary is weed out/ MinqeNga AyasaTah”/may you always have enemies/. Curiously enough, the average Ethiopian feels the need for enemies as if his/her existing troubles are not enough because enemies mean you after important, of some relevance.

“ Paranoia has invaded the ordinary Ethiopia since time immemorial and the result has been both positive and negative The hard belief that everyone in the world is out to get “exceptionally beautiful” Ethiopia has contributed to the spirit of vigilance and resistance that kept the country independent. Yet, this same paranoia has driven the Ethiopians into his/her own shell of suspicion and made him or her hostile to new ideas, to new contacts. Suspicious is bred, trust is hardly ever given. The image of two friends on a long reck vowing loyalty to each other at every stream crossing comes to mind. MAN YAWQAL. Indeed never turn your back on anyone, be suspicious, a smile hides venomous thoughts, and your own mouth is your first enemy. The Ethipopian walks stooped, carrying an invisible load called paranoia. It is pervasive, this paranoia, and is embedded in the culture, in the literature, in the very soul of the Ethiopia.”

Yes. Could that be what all of us here flogging to each other? I believe that is the case. We never have the experience to react to a close relative’s or friends, comrades, leader’s, icon’s thoughts. The moment we did, our decency will be put into suspicious status to the level of “spy” or “enemy”. Hama was right to say this in the explained book above “ Someone has said there Ethiopians in a group hug will be hiding six daggers plus one behind their backs”. Indeed. He is right, “no one is innocent, and all are threatening”. He said. Why? Well here is why, he said, “no one knows why” he said, “ No one is innocent. All are threatening. You can’t explain scientifically explain thunder and lightning nor can you give rational explanation as to why the black cat seems to like staring at you. The world is round? When have you gone around it, please? The Ethiopians may be poor but he thinks the whole world is after him, converting God knows what!”

Yes, as he said it rightly; we simply paranoiac, suspicious. Because of it, best friend of mine who stick with me on bad and good time all those years out of the doze friends that I had out of love and care told me “ why should you care get a headache and battered by so many fools And rude all this years? Who is going to remember you that you were doing your best for your people? Every body is cooking his bread, they all to Ethiopia back and forth, but when they are here you think they are on your side, no one is going to look after you when you suffer of a vicious, won’t you tired of these nonsense of ours out there yet? Leave this none sense debates, and writings and politics alone and let the stupid deal with it!” Could he be right? Might be as Hama said it “who knows?’ The problem with me is for some unknown reason it is in my blood, Ethiopia is one of the thing that is hard get rid of my mind. I never tried to do such but may be in the future when I get burned out.

Was my friend’s advice to tell me “Keep your mouth shut and your eyes down” correct? Ham concluded it in his satire, — keep your mouth shut and your eyes down. E’Lama Athun, keep a low profile. The Ethgiopia hides from himself out of necessary. Is this paranoid too? Who knows? Man YawQal?” // Thanks all both sides of the debate, regardless what we exchange, we still all Ethiopians with a culture of paranoia psyche to protect “the Exceptionally Ethiopia” with the believe and suspicious that everyone in the world is out there to get her. My critique will continue for the future if and when I see it uncomfortable, I will continue praise those who needed to be encouraged and support, let us leave the habit of being cliquish and see things for a common agenda. Ethiopia will prevail. Getachew Reda May 5, 2007 -/-

  48. CORRECTION- Someone has said “there” Ethiopians in a group hug will be hiding six daggers plus one behind their backs”.

Must be read to “Some one has said “THREE” (3) Ethiopians in a group hug will be hiding six daggers plus one behind their backs”.

  49. Thank you Getachew for sharing your views whetther we agree or not. i am sure Hama Tuma appreciates it too as he ahs shown he has enough humor to laugh at himself too.Keep on active.

  50. Brother Lemeso:

I appreciated for the complementary. I will keep up your complementary alive as long as we come to the term all of us based on the common agreement of Agree to disagree. Ineeded thanks brother for sharing your thoughts to value my views. Thanks again, bye for now.
