Dear Dr. Getachew,
I read your article with great enthusiasm. Your narrative, though some of it might promote what WEYANE claimed as opposed to the fact on the ground, is not too bad, but I am afraid, your conclusion fell short of expectations. I do understand that you participated in that Conference as an Academician. As such, it may not be easy to expect a rigorous and persuasive approach. However, even Academicians cannot escape the hard fact – presentation of evidences and postulation of remedial actions.
As far as I am concerned, I am not as optimistic as you appear to be, regarding any positive expectation from the ruling brutal dictatorial regime to take conducive measures to make the next national election free and fair.
They deliberately took fascistic measures during the last election. They proved their intention to cling to power at the expense of the precious lives of our innocent citizens. They have a number of selfish interests at stake. These may include the following:
- The national cake to the tune of 100s of billions of Birr is in their hands, looted in the name of privatisation, under the so called Private Limited Companies – the Megas, the Mesfin Engineerings, the Mesobs, etc. etc.
- They have not yet ensured the disintegration of our country despite a number of inter-ethnic and inter-faith conflict instigations.
Furthermore, thousands of innocent citizens lost their precious lives in the hands of the dictators before, during and after the last national election. Hundreds of thousands of innocent citizens grossly suffered in the hands of the butchers in the concentration camps. Only God knows the level of the spread of HIV/AIDS when they used shared razor blades in those concentration camps. The brutal and fascistic dictators committed ethnic cleansing, genocide and gross crime against humanity. Genuine leaders and members of the opposition political parties as well as members of the free press are still languishing in prisons – prisoners of conscience. The gross sufferings of the innocent Somali citizens in the hands of the foreign aggressors is also a serious question in hand. Your conclusion did not include a recommendation to bring the Regime to the International Court of Justice for the gross crimes they caused against humanity since coming to power.
All concerned fellow citizens should make good use of all opportunities such as the Conference at which you presented your paper to advocate for the respect of proper justice and protection of the basic fundamentals of human rights.
Bringing democracy and peace in our beloved country shall be the concerted efforts of our citizens – not from a good gesture of brutal dictators and fascists who chose to live as bitter enemies of our people and the sovereignty of our great nation.
Justice for All.
* Note for readers - this paper is prepared in June 2007, but the writer withhold from posting expecting that Dr Getachew will refine his paper as he admitted his mistake and promised in the Assimba pal talk room. I could expand the paper within the present context but I prefer to leave as it is.
